This week definitely had its’
ups and downs. The worst was that we had mechanical difficulties with the
marooka. Wednesday, late in the afternoon, with only two more loads needed
to complete the area at “Dead Man’s Curve”, the right tread came off the
machine. But the fellows from the DPW came Thursday morning and put it
back on. Thursday afternoon, again with only a few more loads needed to
complete the entire trail, the left tread came off. So, Friday morning the
guys from the town of Cherry Creek Highway Dept came. They arrived about 9
am and worked on the machine til noon. They worked on it, tweaked it, and
gave it a complete going over. They said that the treads have stretched
out and we need to be gentle with our priceless “dump truck”. So, the rest
of the day we used the Gator and Ainsley’s Kubota for the more difficult
runs. We have the marooka until October 8 when the rental runs out.
But that should be okay because what we will be working on for the rest of the
time is mostly on flat ground. We are so fortunate to have such friends in
the town who come and bail us out and save the day. We are truly grateful!
An impressive “up” is that we have
completed the very long, formerly named, “Bike Trail”. Because the trail
follows the revine or gorge and the creek that runs through it, and, because it
is truly beautiful, the name of the trail has been officially chirstend the
“Gorge-ous Trail”. The inmates joined in on the
beautification of the hill and creek crossing by “Dead Man’s Curve”. They
built fences, lined the banks of the creek and hill with flag stone, and even
built a planter. Carol jumped at the chance to help and the day did not
end without live greenery in said planter. The area is very, very
cool
Finally, we are leaving the
Housington and Arab Hill area. On Monday, tomorrow, we will officially
start work on “Bramble Bush, which is off the Ruttenburg trail head at
Ruttenburg and Lewis. This trail will connect the Lou Ebol Club House to
the main Chautauqua Trail Loop. Anyone who wants to join the work crew can
meet us at the trail head or come to the club house between 9 and 9:30. If
we would have an overflow of volunteers, we could also go and work on the
Boutwell Hill Trail Head trail. All are welcome!! Join the Fun and
Feel the Pride!!
