Paul Robeson is best known for his rich, gut-vibrating voice.
Diving to extraordinarily low registers, Robeson's thrilling bass
carries with it something mystical in the power of song.
Robeson, though, was far more than a voice.
Born in 1898, he was a black man when it was not easy to be one, and
as a communist during the 1950's, he was an activist for an unpopular
and personally dangerous cause.
The story of this man, a two-time All-American athlete,
the valedictorian of his university, lawyer, actor, singer, and
leading civil rights activist, is one of the most extraordinary of the
20th Century.
We follow Robeson not only through his music, but through selections
from films and plays in which he performed, interviews he gave, and
speeches and essays in which he communicated some of the mettle behind
one of history's most exciting and talented figures.
