5-10am
GOOD MORNING.
HERE'S THE story RUNDOWN OF THIS MORNING'S PROGRAM:
AMERICA'S HOST: Bob Edwards
NEWS I/II: Carl Kasell
Hour One
A-1
Pam Fessler reports from Florida where the state
Supreme Court is hearing arguments today on whether or not hand recounts will
be included in the official total. George W. Bush is currently leading Al Gore
by 930 votes after this weekend’s tally of absentee ballots. (4:31)
The Bush campaign is arguing before the Florida state Supreme Court today
that hand recounts are biased and imprecise. But the vote-counters who have
spent long hours examining ballots are more confident in their results.
Eric Westervelt reports on the workers whose efforts are at the
center of the national attention. (4:14)
{B-1
Japan's Prime Minister, Yoshiro Mori (yoh-SHE-roh MOH-ree), today
faces a battle for political survival in Parliament. The opposition, backed
by many members of his own ruling party, say they will submit a no-confidence
motion to have him removed from office.
(2:09)
Rob Gifford reports that ordinary Chinese citizens have been
taking to the Internet to publicize the names of government officials they say
are involved in high-level corruption. Gifford visits Hunan province in Central
China and talks to enraged citizens who demand that the government do something.
More Chinese are taking these complaints to the courts, but without an
independent legal system, many cases are routinely dismissed, and official
reparations can take years to collect. (5:13)
C-1
With the state Supreme Court hearing arguments from the presidential
campaigns, Tallahassee, Florida is in the national spotlight today.
Hordes of reporters, protesters, vendors, and on-lookers have
descended on thete catal erthcrse othelectn will be decided in the next few days.
Melissa Block reports on the scene at the courthouse. (3:35)
D-1
Two months ago, the founder of an Ukrainian Internet newspaper
disappeared.
But the recent discovery of a body believed to be the missing
journalist has created a controversy in Ukraine, a country which according to
the Committee to Protect Journalist says is one of the worst offenders when
in comes to censorship. (4:24)
Richard Knox reports from Boston where officials from 24
African nations came together last week to discuss the future of AIDS care in
their countries. Pharmaceutical companies have pledged to lower the price of
AIDS drugs for the poorest nations, where the rate of infection can reach as
high as one in four people. (4:14)
{E-1} N-P-R's Emily Harris reports that the government is trying to
eliminate holiday shipping problems with on-line retailers.
Last year many customers who bought items on the Internet had to wait
for their purchases well past the holidays. (1:09)
Jim Zarroli reports on the uncertainty workers are facing at
A-T-&-T because of the company's plans for the third massive restructuring in
sixteen years. (5:47)
A-2
Barbara Bradley reports from Tallahassee on Florida's
Supreme Court, which will hear arguments today in a case that may determine
who wins the Presidential election. Lawyers for George W. Bush and Al Gore will
have two hours to make their cases. Bush's lawyers will argue that the original
deadline for certifying the vote should be upheld and that manual ballot
recounts should not be included. Gore's lawyers will argue that there's a
longstanding tradition under Florida law for accepting the results of manual
recounts as the will of the voters. (4:27)
Host Bob Edwards talks to N-P-R's Cokie Roberts about the likelihood
that the Florida Supreme Court will settle the election dispute and what might
happen if it doesn't.
There's a possibility that the Florida legislature might
get involved at some point. And the election dispute could ultimately end up
in the U-S House of Representatives. (4:13)
B-2
David Welna reports from Broward County, one of the
three Florida counties still recounting their ballots.
In the center of this
national turmoil, families in the area took a break over the weekend for a game
of softball, but the talk inevitably turned to politics.
C-2
Jonathan Miller (f) reports from Lima, Peru on President Alberto
Fujimori's resignation, sent in a letter sent from Tokyo, and the decisions
facing Peru's congress as a result. Fujimori's adversaries insist that he knew
about and was involved in large scale corruption. Today, Peru's congress will
begin deliberating about who will lead the country until elections are held
in April and the transfer of power takes place in July. (3:26)
Patriot League:
D-2} Host Bob Edwards talks with commentator John Feinstein about
his latest book, "The Last Amateurs, Playing for Honor and Glory in Division
One College Basketball," which focuses on the Patriot League.
Established ten years ago, schools in the league require their
athletes meet the same academic
requirements as their other students, a standard that has prevented them from
pursuing the best athletes. (5:36)
The Last Amateurs, Playing for Honor and Glory in Division
One College Basketball is published by Little Brown & Company; ISBN:
0316277010)
More Americans are working longer hours than ever, so commentator Joel
Achenbach explains the fine art of stretching one’s free time. (3:12)
Art
E-2
David D'Arcy reports on the new respect for
contemporary art at the big auction houses in New York.
While sales of older paintings have been slow, publicity is fueling
interest in newer artists, but
some worry that it's simply impulse buying. (6:10)

Thelonious Monk challenged the best jazz musicians with his lunging,
angular melodies.
His ballads, while not quite sweet, were delicious. The peers and

Thanksgiving day special
ATC
Noah Adams has a performance chat with two singer/songwriters -
Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin.
They play a blend of bluegrass, folk, and old-time country music.
Their singing harmony has been likened to the Stanley Brothers and the
Carter Family.
They formed a duet in 1985, and were married two years later.
They talk with Noah, and perform songs related to the season, family, and the
Thanksgiving holiday, playing on the banjo, guitar, fiddle, and mandolin.
Their latest CD is called "Songs from the Carter Family."
Speaking of Thanksgiving--
Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish Recipe
For many years, Susan Stamberg has provided NPR listeners with a unique holiday recipe for cranberry relish that came from her late mother-in-law.
By popular demand, WBFO is pleased share that recipe with you.
As Susan says, "it SOUNDS terrible, but TASTES terrific!"
And, to quote WBFO General Manager Jennifer Roth, "Truly, this is GOOD!"
* 2 cups raw cranberries
* 1 small onion
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 3/4 cup sour cream
* 2T horseradish
Grind the cranberries and onion together.
Add remaining ingredients and mix.
Put in a plastic container and freeze.
An hour before serving, move the container from the freezer to the
refrigerator compartment to thaw.
The relish will be thick, creamy, and shocking pink.
Makes one and a half pints.
