Note: each Monday during WBFO's presentation of
NPR's "Morning Edition," and each Sunday after "Opus"
and before Sunday's "All Things Considered", we offer
Music Notes -- a feature calendar of classical notes
coming up during the week ahead. Here is the script for
the week of 3/10

A record number of musicians will be on stage in our Allen Hall
Auditorium.
And a comedian will perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic.

Good morning.
I'm Bill Raffel with U-B Music Notes.

Comedian Robert Klein will come to Kleinhans this Friday and
Saturday nights at eight - for a program titled "How to Mix Music
and Comedy and Live to Tell About It."

Now why is the B-P-O spending all this money on Robert Klein. I
could have presented this program for a heck of a lot less. For
the music - conductors Frank Collura and Robert Stein will lead
the orchestras in Johann Strauss Junior's Pizzicatto Polka,
Benjamin Britten's Soirees Musicales based upon tunes by Rossini-
and Bordin's Polovetsian Dances - or Polivetsian Dances as they
call 'em on those on commercials for kitschy classical
recordings.
You'll hear some broadway show tunes as well this Friday and
Saturday nights at eight in Kleinhans.

Then on Sunday at 2:30 - the B-P-O will gve a children's concert
featuring the Evergreen Marionettes from North Tonawanda.

For more information, call 885-5000.

WBFO's OPUS
American Legion Band

Will 80 musicians be able to fit on the stage of our Allen Hall
Auditorium? That's almost like asking how many people can fit in
a Volkswagen. Well, the American Legion Band of the Tonawandas -
Post 264 thinks all of 80 of them can. They've done the
measurements, and they'll be hear on Wednesday
night at seven for our next Opus Classics concert. William
Weikert will lead the band in this work - the Great Gate of Kiev
from Modestse Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. It's a
piece I think sounds best when it's blasted on a stereo - and
with 80 musicians in our Auditorium.....You'll also hear an
Overture by Franz van Suppe - plus a tribute to Artie Shaw and a
Salute to American Jazz.

This is a great concert for your entire family - and it's your
chance to hear a national champion Legion Band perform for free.
Let's have the section for the audience as crammed as the stage
will be! That's this Wednesday night at seven in our Allen Hall
Auditorium on the U-B Main Street Campus near the Metro Park and
Ride Lot. And hear it on W-B-F-O this Sunday at four.

Fredonia State's King Concert Hall:

Two other bands will be giving concerts this week - The Fredonia
Wind Symphony performs this Wednesday at eight in Fredonia
State's King Concert Hall.

Slee Hall - UB North campus:

Sarah McKoin will lead the U-B Symphonic Band at a free concet
this Thursday night at eight in Slee Hall. They'll perform this
American Hymn by William Schuman - and a march Sine Nomine by
Vaughn Williams - most recognizable as the hymn "For All the
Saints."

Harriet Simons and the U-B Chorus will open the concert with
Josef Rheinberger's Stabat Mater and a Stephen Foster Medley.
That's free - this Thursday night at eight in Slee Hall on the
U-B Amherst Campus.

Also at U-B this week - you can hear two faculty recitals. B-P-O
Principal Clarnetist John Fullam will perform tonight at eight in
Slee Hall - accompanied by pianist Nancy Townsend. Their program
includes this sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Saint Saens in a
mainly French porgram.

Then on Wednesday night at eight - retiring organ and keyboard
professor David Fuller will give a recital on his very own
haprschord - modeled after an 18th century French Instrument.
The program includes an English Suite by Bach plus Beethvoen's
famous Pathetique Sonata.

And you can hear contemporary music in a free recital this
Thursday at noon - presented by cellists Jonathan Golove and Mary
Artmann - along with pianist Helena Bugallo.

At Canisus College - Flutist Marlene Witnauer, Pianist Jane Cary
and Oboist Ronald Richards perform this afternoon at 12:30 in the
College's Cultural Center on Main Strteet.

The Rackham String Quartet performs this Wednesday at 7:30 in the
Fredonia Opera House.

The Potsdam Brass Quartet will come to the Saint Boneventure
Campus this Friday (March 14) at eight. That's in the Rigas
Family Theatre.

Albright Knox Art Gallery:

B-P-O Violinist Mary Louise Nana will give her own recital on
Sunday afternoon - along with Pianist and Composer Persis Vehar -
featuring music of women composers. That's at two - in the
auditorium of the Albright Knox Art Gallery.

And finally - you've heard of a Festival of Nine Lessons and
Carols around Christmas time. Well, you'll hear something
similar for Lent this Sundy at the Church of the Ascention - at
the corner of Linwood and North in Buffalo's Allentown Section.
Herbert Tinney will lead the church choir in
plaintchant, little-known lenten carols, spiritituals, and
contemporary selections. The musical service begins at 4:30.

And that's U-B Music Notes for this week. I'm Bill Raffel. Have
a great week.
If you have items for the Music Notes calendar
send them to us here at WBFO.

U-Beat
Pluralism in American Life

Each week WBFO presents an information piece about
activities at UB that benefit the wider community.
Here is the script for the current UB notes feature.

Four University at Buffalo Professors are trying to help people
from different cultures understand one another. I'm Bill Raffel
on the U-Beat.

Vice-Provost William Fisher helped to edit "Identify, Community,
and Pluralism in American Life" - being published by Oxford
University Press.
The group originally put this together for a pluralism course at
U-B - now mandatory for all undergraduates. And Fischer says
it's an important subject - as students come in contact with
people from different cultures, people with different religous
beliefs, and people of different races.

in: these are the people
out: in the future

Fischer worked on the book with History Professor David Gerber,
Language Profesor Jorge Guitart, and Education Professor Maxine
Seller. And the group focused on more than the differences
between people.

In: The issue
out: Bring us together

This textbook will be used in colleges across the country. For
more information, call us at 829-6000. I'm Bill Raffel on the
U-Beat for W-B-F-O.
