ALL INDIA PEOPLE’S MANIFESTO
Outlining the People’s Agenda for the National Government
Date & Time: 9 June 2009 (3pm to 5pm)
Venue: Press Club of India, 1 Raisina Road, New Delhi
Warm Greetings!
The first day of this month was marked by the start of the 15th session of the Lok Sabha and the subsequent induction of the new Members of Parliament who will steer the course of the country over the next five years. We are writing to invite you to join us in marking the 9th of June 2009 - the last day of this opening session of Parliament - to direct the attention of our leaders to the priorities of the people whose interests they have been chosen to represent.
We aim to do this through the release of a consolidated report of People’s Manifestos prepared across 300 parliamentary constituencies as part of the All India People’s Manifesto (AIPM) effort, followed by an analysis of the concerns that have found resonance among the parties that form the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and the issues that need to be brought to attention.
As you may already know, the AIPM (www.peoplesmanifesto.in) has been a first-of-its-kind initiative which has enabled over 500,000 people to voice their priorities for development and resolve to hold their elected representatives accountable to represent these concerns at the national level. The public release of the 300 local charters that have emerged from this exercise and its presentation to all parties of the UPA is a continuation of this effort to ensure that the government adopts an agenda that is shaped by the ground realities of the people.
We hope you will make it possible to join us on this occasion and extend your solidarity with this mission to hold the government accountable to its commitments and ensure that the interests of the poorest and most marginalized are central to the country’s governance agenda.
In solidarity,
- Amitabh Behar, Campaign Convenor
- Sandhya Venkateswaran, Steering Group Convenor
- Ashok Bharti, Steering Group Convenor
- Lysa John, National Campaign Co-ordinator
