Google DNS claims to be faster. It would be nice if it really is. Is anyone using it in d insti?

Can we  use outside DNS in IIT ? How does all these actually work ?I mean to ask a map of our netmon network right from sending a request from our machine till we get back the required data.

In order to use outside DNS...you have to enter the proxy as 10.201.13.50 instead of netmon.iitb.ac.in ....
because whenever you request the the webpage you first look up for netmon.iitb.ac.in and if your dns server is outside the iitb then you can't access it, because you don't know address of netmon.iitb.ac.in

but I got a little problem...the internal sites are unable to open while using google DNS...Also google DNS will render the IP address of servers of iitb which IIT DNS server allows from outside....

ie. you can't get the ip address of the sites like asc.iitb.ac.in etc which are only accessible from inside

Google DNS would not give the local addresses for the internal sites.
To access these sites with the external IP, we would have to go
through our proxy and our proxy blocks all connections to internal
sites in order to reduce the load.

We can just use 10.200.1.11 as the alternate DNS and the Google DNS as
primary. This would settle the issue.

For the record, it actually is. Both ping times, normal response times and packet loss rates trump the DNS from my ISP, or OpenDNS.

no, netmon bans them via proxy, not via DNS

No, we still use netmon, so no.

no way...they are banned through ip addresses not through their human friendly names....

I can't completely understand as to how it is exactly done.
So in my view, whenever I make a request for a site www.example.com, a DNS request is made to determine the IP address of the domain. say the IP is 12.53.43.43. Now my browser would try to make connection with the server at this IP address which is intercepted by netmon and the request goes through if the site does not belong to the blocked lists.
However, when I directly enter the IP address of the site in the browser the request is completed even if the IP corresponds to a host name belonging to blocked site. How is that possible?

Try opening www.kproxy.com and it says Access Denied.
Now enter the ip address of the domain name (as found in ping) (66.232.107.140) and it works.

You can try using IP addresses, it works afaik. I think the block is using some key words, but not sure.

@saif. Actually that's not true. Try getting the IP of a banned site (say by using ping), and then put it in the browser. If the site is big enough to be hosted on a dedicated server, it will work. (At least it used to work a couple of months ago).

I have noticed that a few blocked sites indeed open up when accessed via IP address, though many Don't.
