How easy is it to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 8?

I am planning to buy a Windows laptop and install Ubuntu on it. So should I get a Windows 7 system or a Windows 8?

Get a Laptop with no OS or DOS
it will help you cut the cost on your purchase
Regarding Windows OS you can always get the licensed version from IIT B & Microsoft Portal

Get a Windows 7 one as you don't have to deal with UEFI hassles. You can upgrade to Windows 8.1 thanks to free keys provided by our institute.

And PS, get Ubuntu 13.04

It can be pretty nasty if you install windows after installing ubuntu,
If you are installing it first time, find a person who has done Linux
installation before. Its not always safe to do partitioning when there
is already one OS installed.

For sake of the easiness :

1. Buy a laptop which does not have any OS installed. If it comes
with Windows, there wont be space for linux anyway so you have to
remove it, or shrink its partition (gparted application from live
ubuntu-cd would do the trick, time consuming). Anyway, a lappy without
any OS or freeDOS will be cheaper. Avoid Dell (at least Inspiron),
they heat up on Ubuntu. And they don't have linux support to update
BIOS. I am not sure what is the current status. Lenovo and Accer works
quite well on Linux.
3. Download windows7 or 8 from MS-Store (IIT provides it for
free) and install it on a partition. Make sure to leave at least some
GB for Ubuntu. You can access windows partitions in Ubuntu but not the
other way round. So installing windows on a much smaller partition
would not hurt.
4. Install Ubuntu after installing windows. Its detects windows
(I can vouch for 7). And it will prepare a menu for a startup to
select the OS of your choice.

Installig ubuntu on a laptop pre-installed with Windows 8 is possible but have a tedious process and success rate is not high.
I will recommend to have a dos system and install ubuntu first then windows 8.1 (Both of them as easily available)

But dos systems are rarely available and nowadays even win7 .. So you can optimize options for yourself

It would be good if you can go for the updated version, Windows 8 itself, as it is the most updated one. Regarding the dual booting with Ubuntu, the steps are quite easy, if you are able to get any 64 bit latest version. The boot problems will get ok after one single run of the Boot-Repair tool, which is available in ubuntu.

13.04? Not always a good idea. It's slower, and it hates IITB-Wireless. I'm thinking of downgrading to precise.

But yeah, preinstalled Win8+UEFI is very, very annoying. Depending on the hardware, you either may have some moderate to extreme hassle getting Ubuntu installed, with some cases where it's just not possible (and other cases where it's not possible without wiping the HDD)

@Tony No, not always. With many installs I've seen that there is leftover GPT data that needs to be cleared up, and Boot Repair chokes on that (The fix: http://askubuntu.com/a/244334/69210). Boot Repair itself is a very intimidating tool if the default buttons don't work. I had to tussle with this for almost 5 hours, trying various things and wiping my system multiple times (It was possible for me to install Ubuntu alongside 8 in the sense that turning UEFI on and off in BIOS switched OS, but not via grub. Clearing out the hard drive, switching to mbr and reinstalling Win8 gave problems with GPT data that were not immediately apparent.). And I'm no stranger to installing Ubuntu, even on many UEFI systems. So.... I'd be wary of suggesting that someone who probably has minimal experience in this attempt it. It can result in disaster

For those who want to try installing on UEFI anyway, check out http://askubuntu.com/a/228069/69210 and (if necessary) the other link above.

Oh. Is it that nobody's 13.04 connects to IITB-Wireless? I thought it was my Mac's problem. Instead of downgrading to precise, maybe just wait for saucy now?

Apparently 13.04 works with some IITB-Wireless hotspots. It's all random. And since IITB Wireless is broken big time anyway (very chancy to get a connection even from Windows), I'm not even sure anymore if it' 13.04's fault. -_-

I had an idea that installing Ubuntu on Windows 8 will be troublesome. I found a fix as Manish suggested, using UEFI.
But I wasn't sure about the success.

I guess Ubuntu 12.10 is good enough for me now.

I was thinking about getting a DOS machine, but I do not have any experience about installing Windows. Though I have installed Ubuntu on a pre-installed Windows 7 system.

If I go for a DOS system, I just need to download the .iso file from IITB portal on a flash drive and then just follow the instructions from boot menu, is it?

Regarding the 13.04-IITB Wireless compatibility, the problem is faced in Old CSE Building and Kresit only, works fine at all other places. Reasons for this I suppose is improper settings of routers at these places, since IITB Wireless was installed here quite recently, removing Kresit-WiFi. No issues for Windows/12.04 apart from frequent hiccups which is most probably due to a more general problem faced by the entire server, affecting LAN as well.

@Ranveer not true, other places like Phy dept bhi nahi chalta hai. Also i've noticed that it has a much less chance of working with LCC/LCT wifi though it works fine with LCH wifi.

@Puja the only issue is if your computer came preinstalled with Win8 on UEFI. If it wasn't, then all you have to do is download the Win8 ISO from msstore.iitb.ac.in (I usually get the key from MSstore and download from DC as it's faster), make a CD (or pen drive if you know how), and install. Then repeat for Ubuntu.

First install some partition modification software inside Windows 8.
Then reduce i.e. resize your existing C:\ partition to a smaller space.

Then in the remaining space, either create new partitions or u can also create them when installing Ubuntu.

For installing Ubuntu, simple way available today is to create a bootable USB pen drive. This can be created using USB disk creator option inside existing Ubuntu or using one utility u get on internet which works inside windows. You need to provide iso image of the Ubuntu setup.

Most of the Ubuntu users know this. But many others may not be knowing, so. Ubuntu 12.04 is a long term support release so it supports updates for 5 years is very much stable.
It has also released 12.04.1, 12.04.2 versions, 6 months later. So rather than installing Ubuntu 13.04, 13.10 etc., I prefer going for Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.04.2 version.

2nd important thing is:
Ubuntu have had problems with UEFI drivers. so for safety, go inside bios, find this option called UEFI. Disable this. Once you diable then there is no problem.
If you enable this, then it may create problems. This is severe problem with Samsung laptops. so be careful. Thats all.

Thank you in advance.

There is an application called unetbootin which is quite versatile for
making boot-able live-usb.

I did the same stuff..
it created problems even after numerous times, have ended up having bad sectors in my hard disc , and its gone for hardware replacement under 3 months of purchase.
My suggestions: don't mingle win8 with Ubuntu 13.04.
On desktop this combo is working extremely well, but on laptop its creating lots of problems

I would be very reluctant to say that; in fact the opposite may be true. 12.10 and 13.04 have better UEFI SecureBoot support over 12.04 and company iirc.

This sounds like a half-install to me. It's very hard to destroy the hard disk irreversibly while installing OSes; the drive can always be wiped with a live boot. However, while installing Ubuntu on a system that came preinstalled with Win8 with UEFI on, there's a portion (this may or may not occur depending on the exact hardware) where the system is in a limbo state between two OSes -- both are installed, but no proper dual boot. The correct thing to do is disable UEFI and reinstall 8, then Ubuntu, and then clear the GPT cruft.

In case anyone is using preinstalled windows 8 + UEFI, it is possible to dual boot even without wiping original windows installation. The only catch here is that to switch between the OSs, you'll have to switch between using UEFI and legacy boot rather than getting that option in GRUB.

@Ashwin,

I did you quite follow you. Switching OS would require at least two installed.
The logic behind wiping windows is that it might be installed on full HD. Since
Windows is available inside the campus easily, wiping and reinstalling might
cause less "fun with fixing" than setting and debugging UEFI (I really don't
know how it works).

Now how to install the other OS in Windows8 without resizing/reinstalling it?

May be these people are talking about the method in which you install Ubuntu as an application inside Windows.
Remember in Ubuntu 08.04, they had that feature. Not sure if it still exist.

Btw there is a tool called partition magic in Windows, which allows you to resize the OS drive as well. You need to set the tasks like reduce C: drive to a smaller space (say 50-100GB whatever needed for Windows). Since Windows is already running, it will ask you to restart. so then it will start the program on the next boot before the OS loads, it will reduce ur C: drive.
Then after restart, things work well.
Then you can do all the other partitions in the remaining space and install Linux separately.

This is something not many people know. I have seen most of the people reinstalling the Windows OS just because they want to keep less space for C drive.
I have done in this way all the times. This saves a lot of effort of installing Windows again.
Although it is slightly risky, if you do it properly, it works perfectly.

But it is recommended to do it in presence of someone who has seen it working once.
Hope this idea helps everyone.

Thank you.

Chinmay

That's WUBI. It was discontinued in 12.10 or 13.04. And it works pretty well with Windows on UEFI, but I don't have much experience with it. It's problematic otherwise, as it's dependent on your Windows installation and is a bit slower.

You don't need to install Partition Magic, the in built diskmgmt.msc is good enough for shrinking even the C drive. The only issue is that (especially for Vista), there is some stuff kept near the end of the drive which limits the shrink size.

@Dilawar - Chinmay's elaborate method is what I was talking about. I might want to keep my original windows version because the IITB license is invalid after I pass out.
@Manish - WUBI didn't work out for me with Win 8 + Precise.
As Chinmay mentioned , The method I followed involved resizing windows drive and then installing ubuntu the other drive without WUBI. There are many tutorials online which can be used.
