Hi All,

Hope the previous semester went well for all of you!

As all of you would know, the web and coding club also conducts offline events, seminars and competitions besides its online presence. In the last semester a lot of such events and competitions were conducted and sometimes in association with outside organisations. Some of the highlight events would be : Yahoo HackU!, Firefox App Days, Scratch Weekend, Advanced HTML5 & CSS3 Sessions, Introduction to Open Source, ACM-ICPC Preparatory Events, etc.

Now, while we are gearing up for the semester ahead, we are in the process of preparing the calendar of events and competitions to be organised. As a convention, wncc generally conducts events related to python, django, javascript and jquery and some miscellaneous topics in this part of the year. Regarding the same, we would like to invite suggestions from all of you. We do have an informal structure of scheduled events and your inputs will be appreciated!

Introductory and Beginner Level:
1. Python Hands-On session followed by Python One-liner Competition (intended for newbies to python)
2. Javascript and jQuery (Introductory) followed by Webpage designing compeition
3. MatLab or the open source alternative (scilab)
4. LaTeX (but a lot of people conduct latex sessions - optional)

Advanced Seminar:
Can be conducted in topics like:
1. Machine Learning
2. Artificial Intelligence
3. GPUs
4. Image Processing

Sessions on hosting/domains, web development essentials, etc.
Competitions on debugging, etc.
Events on miscellaneous topics of common interest in the group.

Manager, Web and Coding Club.

Please conduct hackathons since i think that what i learnt or made in 24 hrs of Hack U was much greater than what i did in wen whole year.

Hi

I think we must conduct the following 2 sessions :

1. Introduction to Machine learning using scikit-learn (http://scikit-learn.org/stable/)

Prerequisite : Python

Content : Introduction to Machine learning and the problem of classification, followed by an introduction to sklearn (the classifier library, utilities for scaling, cross validation etc.) and finally a discussion on possible solutions to an active Kaggle competition (101 level).

2. Contributing to open source software

Prerequisite : Basic familiarity with the command line tool chain

Content : The aim of the session will be to introduce buzzwords like Mailing lists, IRC, version control using git, the funda of patch and diff etc. The session should also provide pointers on finding a project, GSoc etc. It would also be cool if we can get together a few people who have contributed patches to open source project and have them answer questions.

Thanks

I would like to suggest a workshop related to Cloud Computing. I am sure there are many students in insti who have experience with AWS. I would also recommend the SaaS (Software as a Service) class from Coursera which introduces cloud computing via a simple web application.

Cloud computing is the next big thing in the job market (apart from big data, which is very relevant to cloud computing)

Cheers,
-Sudhi

If you guys have people who can do it, organize sessions about navigating/browsing huge codebases and using debugging/profiling tools.

It might seem boring on the face (and supposed to be taught to CS students largely during the OS lab), but it is an immensely important skill to have that is usually lacking. Utility is, of course, only for those who will end up touching large projects (or creating anything with more than 10K lines of code with someone else) or writing something for production use rather than just hobbyist hacking (and don't get me wrong, I love hobby hacking).

@Sudhi
Is it using cloud computing or deploying something like a cloud?

You could also have a session on Scrapy and how to make a topic focussed web crawler out of it using NLTK and scikit-learn. Many people would love to know how crawlers work at the backend of web giants like Google & Bing.

@Mayank,

Assuming you referred to the SaaS course, its about using the AWS infrastructure for application development. So yes, more like "deploying application over the cloud."

As for the topic of Cloud Computing itself, I am not sure how much can be covered at the undergraduate level. TBH, I am debating whether to take the graduate level course myself. Virtualization, openstack, scheduling, resource allocation,... the list is fascinating. See here.

Cheers,
-S

Finally, We have decided on a set of events, competitions and sessions to be conducted this semester. We have tried to accommodate all the suggestions mentioned in this thread. Following is the list of events (We are not mentioning the dates in advance due to possible rescheduling later - We'll inform the exact dates in proximity to the events)
  • Python Hands-On session, followed by Python One-Liner Competition
  • Hackathon (sponsored by GDG, Mumbai) which includes minor talks on git, web APIs, etc.
  • Prepare for GSOC 2014 (This time we have planned to have it well in advance, in Jan itself so that students get enough time to establish contacts with the organisation communities)
  • What's in the cloud? - An introduction to cloud computing and services
  • Go SMS! - Event on txtWeb
  • Publish on the web - Introduction to domain names, DNS configuration, web hosting, etc.
  • Matlab or Scilab - Beginner Level
  • Javascript, jQuery - Followed by Web Designing Competition (freshies)
  • Machine Learning using Scikit
  • Django Demystified - Confused over RoR vs Django!
  • BTP Weekend - Discussion on some of the interesting BTP projects currently been pursued by seniors - Can even extend and not limit only to BTP.
  • Debugging Pro - A competition on debugging tools, etc.
  • Technopreneurship Event - An entrepreneurial event to interact with people who have made it big, following their passion in web and coding - someohow putting this together has been a big deal - Please do suggest speakers if you have anyone in mind!

Apart from the above mentioned events, we are planning to have informal meetups where we can discuss on some topics of interest. WnCC is also organising the coding GC towards the end of this month. More specifically, the first five events are scheduled for January.

Comments and suggestions are invited! Please do contribute.
