Has anyone used Salesforce ?

I was recently applying for visa and was surprised that the government was using Salesforce (force.com) for making the visa application app

I also seen many companies using Desk which is the customer support desk management software.

I was interested in knowing what you used in Salesforce and what for ? Also what all can Salesforce be really used for ?

I've seen ExactTarget before (seems to run on the same engine, dunno).

 AFAICT salesforce makes generic frameworks/apps for businesses which can then be extended for specific implementations. Not very sure though. You might want to have a look at http://salesforce.stackexchange.com/, the questions there seem to be indicative of the kind of software it is.

Not sure I understand why someone would bother to learn a different language/platform for specific purpose but then again enterprise is a totally different ball game. Thanks to both of you :)
