Dear All,

As you might know we have HackNight happening this weekend over Saturday Night.

There is a reason why we had floated the forms early and asked you to register. It's sole purpose was to get you to think over what you want to hack. Many a times people just come to venue(NSL) and then think of what they want to make. Thinking of idea is critical step and this takes time. You dont want to waste time thinking of idea in those 14 hrs.

  • Quite a few people are confused as to if hacknight is related to hacking ? It is not - if you are confused have a read at http://wncc.webfactional.com/hack-night-unleashed/ .
  • Some said they have this work / that work - you must know that hacknight is organised once a year. It is a different experience - sitting over the night in trying to hack up an idea and as a coding enthusiast and at iitb you should try it out once. I remember having had 3 nightouts over 3 consecutive weekends having private hacknights ( just me and 2 batchmates at my room over the night ).
  • Some of the people are skeptic about whether they have skills to do the hack - as said previously it is more important to have enthu and work on idea. In the worst case you might follow a tutorial. Also it is not necessary you have completed hack at the end - it is more important you worked on it and having a decent prototype. There will be seniors around to guide you and if you dont do it now - you will never be able to.
Finally do register at tinyurl.com/hackiitb . Also there will be laptop stickers and refreshments for all participants over the night - so we need a number to go by.

We will be having a brainstorming session tomorrow at NSL from 9pm to 10pm. This will basically be one to one interaction to define scope of what you would do as part of hacknight and going over idea/s.

Thanking You
Anil Shanbhag

Hi,
I'm part of IITB Racing and we were sort of wondering if solving our people management problem would interest anyone for hacknight 2.0.
IITB Racing is very big family and we frequently need our members to work on various aspects of the car we are making (such as welding, getting stuff, assembling, testing etc). Depending on the deadlines, people's skills and their free time, different people are allotted different tasks.
However, right now we don't have a central system to figure out what people are doing right now and what they have been assigned. Thus it frequently turns out that too many people get called in for that welding task since all this is happening manually.
Thus here are some problems which we thing might be solvable thru a hack:
-Acquiring data. Its boring if people have to fill in their free time everyday and this is one of the primary causes that such systems tend to fail in the long run. It would be nice if this process were automated ie the person world be notified at say 11PM every night via a browser plug-in (that pops out a new window with a form) or a mail to fill in their data about the next day.
-Using this data to figure out who is available the next day for a given task. And once they have been allotted a task, to make sure they are marked "busy/not available" during that time period (to prevent timing clashes).

Al this could be managed by a google spreadsheet probably but the system tends to get a bit too messy when lots of people have access to the spreadsheet and the start editing stuff etc. What we hope for is a simple interface for data entry and analysis of that data.

I'm not too sure about the feasibility of this problem for a 14 hour hackathon, but it would be a really useful application for our team (and many others, no doubt).

Regards,
Adwait
