Hi,
I'm part of IITB Racing and we were sort of wondering if solving our people management problem would interest anyone for hacknight 2.0.
IITB Racing is very big family and we frequently need our members to work on various aspects of the car we are making (such as welding, getting stuff, assembling, testing etc). Depending on the deadlines, people's skills and their free time, different people are allotted different tasks.
However, right now we don't have a central system to figure out what people are doing right now and what they have been assigned. Thus it frequently turns out that too many people get called in for that welding task since all this is happening manually.
Thus here are some problems which we thing might be solvable thru a hack:
-Acquiring data. Its boring if people have to fill in their free time everyday and this is one of the primary causes that such systems tend to fail in the long run. It would be nice if this process were automated ie the person world be notified at say 11PM every night via a browser plug-in (that pops out a new window with a form) or a mail to fill in their data about the next day.
-Using this data to figure out who is available the next day for a given task. And once they have been allotted a task, to make sure they are marked "busy/not available" during that time period (to prevent timing clashes).
Al this could be managed by a google spreadsheet probably but the system tends to get a bit too messy when lots of people have access to the spreadsheet and the start editing stuff etc. What we hope for is a simple interface for data entry and analysis of that data.
I'm not too sure about the feasibility of this problem for a 14 hour hackathon, but it would be a really useful application for our team (and many others, no doubt).
Regards,
Adwait
