The idea is to host a Capture The Flag question over a website.

The website will have hidden/locked/cryptic pages which the user will have to "solve" with methods as simple as JS injections and as tough as sending requests over unconventional ports and protocols. It shall not be limited to IITB but can be made public. My original idea was to have a basic prize money which increases with total traffic as we can earn in ads as well, but Manish contradicted it with the quantitative limitation of that money compared to the attractiveness the sound of it offers.

In any case, such a contest can be fun if we succeed in publicising it over developer circles. Another idea is to involve a key concept related to programming required for solving each section, and we'll be revealing the solution of one section every fortnight or so with a discussion thus teaching the interested community along.

Requesting comments and reviews...

this is a very potential Idea! If at all going public seems a little difficult, then we can try to keep it Inter-IIT, that wud be fun too...

The main pain being to develop such hackable scenarios... but Yeah,, this is awesome and totally Doable... (y) :)

Yes. We need someone to do it. I am in for helping, and I just need two more people to code. Interested folks reply to this post.

Sincerely
Cheeku

As discussed before, this is a nice idea. The self-funding thing would be hard but I'm pretty sure we can get gymkhana funding.

There was once a similar competition at BITS (restricted to BITS students, but I didn't know that and participated online anyway :P) though it was more on the usual CTF format (solve a challenge to unlock the next one). Questions and solutions can be found in this blog post I wrote. Ideas can be taken from there. Aside from that, Security Stack Exchange has a CTF team that's semi-active. We post solutions on the meta once the CTF closes (see here), you might be able to pick up some questions there though most of them are a bit advanced.

I don't mind helping but I won't have the time to sit and code this :P
