Hello,

I have tried installing Jupiter (it didn't install properly though, I think), laptop-mode-tools, tlp. But still the Ubuntu gets heated up very quickly. Apart from cleaning laptop's cooling fan, could you suggest anything to keep temp. under control?

I had the same problem with my Dell-inspiron. Updating BIOS helped a bit. Its
hard to do it in linux (since Dell does not support linux). If you also have
windows/DOS installed, update the BIOS.

Assuming that you have Dell machine,

Try changing the graphic driver. Propriety drivers are effective in temperature control in some cases. In some cases open source drivers do it better.

If you are using radeon (open source drivers for ATI/AMD cards), depending on your kernel, it may be required to specify dynamic power management on the kernel boot parameter (It should be already specified if your are on 14.04).
Read about it here.

Depending on what is causing overheating, toggling hardware acceleration makes a significant difference.

Also look for processes that eat up CPU whenever you think the laptop is overheating. top and/or htop will help. chrome and vlc are usually the culprit in mine

If possible, switch to a lightweight Desktop Environment (DE) like Openbox. GNOME/Unity tend to be intense.

You can try LUbuntu, XUbuntu.

One of my friend was also having same problem. When Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was installed, problem reduced.
Both above LUbuntu and XUbuntu 14.04 are available now.
Installation procedure is same as that of Ubuntu like download iso file. Create bootable USB drive and so on.

Thank you.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I have updated the BIOS and enabled the DPM. There is some 8-9 degrees of temp fall, which is good.
I cannot switch to LUbuntu, as I specifically need Ubuntu right now.

I had the same issue with Ubuntu 12.04, solved it by blacklisting the nvidia drivers and installing bumblebee instead.

USE SMC Fan control for windows, and update your BIOS.
