Ubuntu14.04 login problem

Hi,
   I have this strange login problem with ubuntu 14.04.
(1) When I enter a wrong password, it correctly points out with an error message.
(2) But when I enter correct login password, the screen goes to 'loading mode' and after some time it again shows the login screen asking for password
So I am not able to go beyond this and login successfully. I tried methods given on the net for changing the password, they do change the password but same (2) things happen.
Any suggestions, before I re-install ?

I suspect your Unity crashes on start (Unity is started on successful login).

Normally, I'd debug the issue with any DE, but Unity is a PITA. I suggest you login to a text terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1), install a different DE (Desktop Environment), either kubuntu-desktop (great looks, kinda heavy, as heavy as Unity) or lubuntu-desktop (not-so-great looks, but lightweight, so install quickly, or xubuntu-desktop (same pros and cons as lubuntu).

After you sudo apt-get install <DE of choice>, a reboot (quicker alternative: sudo killall X) the login screen should let you choose which DE you want go to.

The issue is with .Xauthority file..

Login through tty console and remove the ~/.Xauthority file.
You should now be able to login without issues.

It may have happened that the user and groups of the .XAuthority file
may have changed. Try logging into text terminal when you reach the
login screen and try typing this - chown username:username .xAuthority
where username is the username of your ubuntu account.

Btw the .XAuthority file is in the ~ directory.
