Hi Lily.
For what it's worth, here's the exchange we had last year preceded by the exchange from the year before. J might be another person to talk with. Saltzman's office made it clear to them that they had WNBR's back.

Thanks for the quick follow-up, J.  It's always worth asking!

If you've got any ideas for other spaces, I'm all ears.

Thanks again.

Carl

Hi Carl, unfortunately, we have events in both the MC and the RG that day and night and need every parking space we have.

Hi J.

I'm resurrecting an old email chain, here (see below).

We ended up finding a terrific meetup point for the World Naked Bike Ride last year but Nike nabbed it out from under us this year.  That means we're back on the hunt for a spot.

What is the status of the former Red Lion Inn lots (between the Colosseum and the River) for the afternoon and evening of Saturday June 18th?

Thanks again.

Carl

Hi J,
Just following up on Brendan Finn's inquiry.

We are looking for a big chunk of outdoor space near downtown for the start of this year's World Naked Bike Ride.  The parking lot at the former site of the Red Lion Inn (between the Colosseum and the river) would suit our needs perfectly.  What would it take for us to use it on the night of June 19th?

Thanks.

Hi J- thanks for the call today, look forward to following up on the items we discussed. But as far as the "World Naked Bike Ride" appreciate your willingness to consider allowing the organizers to use your lot to congregate participants. The date is Saturday, June 19th at starting at 10pm. Carl Larson, cc'd here is one of the organizers and working with our office and the PPB. Again, appreciate your organizations consideration of this request.

Thanks

Brendan

Brendan and Stacy,

I've been charged with looking into the former site of the Red Lion Inn next to the Broadway Bridge by the Coloseum.  It appears to be owned by Aegean Corp. (The Blazers / Paul Allen).  Do you have any suggestions as to how I get through to someone in that organization to discuss use of that lot?

I'd appreciate any tips you've got.

Thanks.

Hi Dave,
We THOUGHT that might be a concern...
I've pitched the idea of rescheduling to the group and will get back to you soon.  Fingers-crossed, we can work this out.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Regards,
Carl

Good morning Carl!

I hope all is well with you.

I have briefly discussed this event, which is scheduled to occur on the night of June 12th, with our Traffic Division Captain Eric Hendricks and have copied Eric on this email. When you and I met with Brendan and Stacy last week, we discussed the fact that this event was largely successful last year because of the assistance provided by our Traffic Division. Captain Hendricks related to me that in order to successfully manage a large event like this, it requires virtually all of the personnel assigned to the Traffic Division including motorcycles.

It has come to our attention that June 12, 2010, is the date of the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade. All members of the Traffic Division will begin their work day at 2 am. Since the WNBR begins at midnight on that date, in order for the Traffic Division to support this event officers would be required to work up to 24 hours straight or more. Obviously this presents a significant problem as we cannot require our officers to work 24 consecutive hours. This would present numerous safety issues.

Question--Would it be possible to schedule the ride in Portland on a different day? If so, I would ask that you work with Captain Hendricks and his team in the effort to identify an alternative date.

If rescheduling the ride on a different day is not possible, I recommend that we meet with Brendan and Stacy, and perhaps Captain Hendricks as well, as soon as possible and continue our discussions.

Please advise when you can.

Best regards---Dave

Commander Famous,
Many thanks for taking the time to meet with me today.  I really am proud to live in a city with a police force willing to entertain without skepticism a huge naked bike ride through downtown.

Here are some of the details you requested.

From here on in, I'll refer to the World Naked Bike Ride as WNBR.

First, Matt Picio (matt....@gmail.com) is the gentleman who helped plan the route and work with the police last year.  His work schedule makes midday meetings difficult, but I expect you'll eventually meet him.  I think you'll find that he has a great mind and attitude towards problem solving.

Stephen Upchurch (soupc...@gmail.com) is the primary organizer of this event.  Matt and I are acting as police liasons.

Here is the global WNBR website: http://www.worldnakedbikeride.org
As you can see, most cities do this during the daytime.  Portland also traditionally has a daytime naked ride.  Its attendance, however, is only usually a couple dozen people and it usually just stays on the east side.  To be clear, the event we are talking about would begin on the night of June 12th at midnight (so, technically, it would be on June 13th).

"Shift" is the loosely organized group of people who organize "Pedalpalooza": http://www.shift2bikes.org
The team of folks who are working on facilitating WNBR are generally involved with Shift.

"Umbrella" is a non-profit organization that occasionally provides event liability insurance and fiscal sponsorship of Shift-related events.  Umbrella has no role with WNBR at this point, but the name may come up, so I figure I'd mention it.  Matt Picio and I are board members of this organization.

At the moment, organizers are focusing on finding a suitable startpoint and discussing issues surrounding alcohol (safety, legality, liability, inevitability...).

We will keep you posted as this process continues.  Please speak up if you have any concerns or good ideas.

Again, many thanks to you and Commissioner Saltzman's office for recognizing the unique nature of this event and helping to keep it fun and safe.

Kind regards,
Carl
