Dear Neighbors,

WNA will not be holding a formal Clean-up this Fall. Here is some information on what the French St. Neigh. Assn. is doing:

Fall Clean-Up Update / Alleys / Rats

The Fall Clean-Up is scheduled for Saturday, October 23.  Volunteers should meet at 9:30AM in the Park.

  • Helping Hands is closed for COVID, so this will be a bring-your-own-tools event.  FSNA will supply trash bags and non-latex sterile gloves, but if you have work gloves, you may wish to bring them.
  • Urban Capital (Moe Galal) has kindly agreed to lend us a dumpster truck for the day.  The company renovated 1714 10th and is awaiting final permitting on 1716 10th.  POC = Meegan Hurtubise (me...@urbancapital.co) M: (703) 901-1165
  • Shaw Clean + Safe will once again collect household hazardous waste and transport it to Fort Totten.
  • We'll also offer trash/recycle can clean-out:  Wheel yours over to be hosed out.

There was much discussion of the dual plague of rats and mosquitoes this summer.  On those fronts:

  • Please bring your trash and recycle bins onto your property (and out of the alleys) after pick-up.  And please police your property for standing water.
  • FSNA continues to liaise with DPW in the hope of having damaged cans removed from the 10th Street alley.
  • Sean Stevens and Kevin Parker will work with the city on a neighborhood-wide rat abatement later this year, post-Clean-Up.
  • Kevin also picks up litter around the neighborhood on Saturday mornings at 9:30AM and would be happy to have help!

  • There will be a Halloween event on Sunday, October 31, 4-6PM at the Westminster Playground with music and arts and crafts, followed by trick-or-treating.  See attached flyer, paper copies of which have been distributed throughout the neighborhood.  POCs for questions: sas...@gmail.com, debby....@gmail.com, franksn...@gmail.com.
  • The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Public Art Building Communities has approved a grant for the mural overlooking French Street Park.  Painting and installation are expected in spring 2022.
  • Join bulb planting in the tree boxes of French Street on November 6/7!  Kevin Parker will have more than 800 tulip, daffodil, and hyacinth bulbs to beautify the neighborhood.  Financial and sweat equity contributions would be welcome: if you have a box directly in front of your house, please collect bulbs from Kevin and plant them yourself.  A drill with a wide drill bit is recommended.
