At our last meeting at Kell's, I promised to circulate a draft
proposal for a web-based investigative journalism outfit in time for
you to digest prior to our scheduled meeting on Wednesday evening
January 20.
My goal is to get this draft to you ideally by this Friday (January
15) but absolutely no later than next Monday (January 18).
When we meet on January 20 we can make any necessary substantive
changes. I'll then polish it up in short order.
Look out for a message from Emily regarding the exact time and
location of our January 20 meeting.

Give me a call sometime. Jay and I have been meeting with the bigger
WMTM group as well, and I can give you an update on where that's
going. I am at 503-936-3769.

The "bigger" group is different from the incubator group. It's working
in part on similar goals as this one. We decided to work separately
for a couple of reasons, but are likely heading toward convergence.
You can follow the other group here:

Hope to see you Wednesday!

Another project coming out of WMTM was an incubator for freelancers, a
plan to develop a physical networking type place. That, I think, is
still separate.
The local chapter Society for Professional Journalists is talking
about ways to better support all of the interesting and innovative
ideas that are circulating around Portland/Oregon these days. In
addition to my involvement with WMTM, I sit on the SPJ board.
If nobody has any objections, I'd like to be considered an informal
representative of SPJ as I continue my involvement with this effort.
The society has a very lean budget this year, so its ability to help
financially is limited, but it has other resources -- including e-mail
and snail mail lists of journalists from around the region, a bit of a
megaphone, and occasionally national-level support. My involvement
with WMTM will continue unabated, but I'd like to keep SPJ updated on
how things are going with the group, and keep the group informed of
any SPJ efforts or abilities it should be aware of. Sound OK?
See you all Wednesday at Backspace.
