Hi All,

I recently mentioned that I'd post something for you to review today
or Monday (1/18) at the latest. It looks like I'll have something
posted by noon on Monday (1/18).

Allow me to say a few things about the "product" that I'll be posting,
so that you'll have a sense of the "process" that I've followed. I've
spoken with a number of people who have either been in contact with
Ron Buel's group (Emily Harris) or who are actual members of Ron's
group (Steve Suo and Jay Hutchins). In my conversations with them
several things have become clear:

(1) Their group has currently developed a "purpose" statement and a
list of "values" for a new online investigative journalism enterprise.

(2) Their group also seems to be in the process of doing some
excellent research on the various models that currently exist.

(3) But to date they have not produced a concrete description of what
would be specifically compelling about an "online" version of
investigative journalism.

So, with the help of some of the members of our group, we decided we
could best "add value" to this larger collaborative effort by trying
to spell out what -- specifically -- good journalism on-line would
look like (i.e. what would make it more unique, compelling, creative,
engaging, accessible, and interactive than what we currently find, in,
say, the print version of The Oregonian). In doing so, we've
definitely drawn from our last discussion at Kell's, but we've also
come up with some new ideas.

I'm looking forward to your comments when we meet on Wednesay (1/20)
at at 5:30 PM at BACKSPACE (115 NW 5th); http://www.backspace.bz/.
