1) First, a hearty thanks! When you find any reasonably functional
software offered for free, that's amazing. I've just installed it on
the pc and mobile device. This is definitely a reasonably functional
piece of software, and as a student, with limited resources, could not
be more appreciative for you offering it at a "cost" we can all
afford! Looking forward to using this app more and more.

Plus, I've found your website, and supporting documentation to be very
well arranged and clear. Again, not something that is "automatic"
these days. It shows you've actually put some thought into your work
and it's for the benefit of us... the user! So thank you very much!

2) In addition to the functionality you are currently providing, I'm
wondering if you have/are considering some sort of stroke order
animation?

You mention the website mdbg.net, so I'm sure you are familiar with
the stroke animation they provide. In addition, a free desktop
software called Pablo likewise uses the CE-DICT Database, however
provides stroke animation.

The only "mobile" apps I know of that provide dictionary and stroke
animation are paid.

I'm wondering the following... if you have considered adding stroke
animation... what do you feel are the greatest barriers to you doing
so? Is it that you do not have the stroke order animation data?

3) Other dictionaries I use likewise rely on the CE-Dict files and
have an update feature, where periodically you can click "update" and
it will download the updated CE-DICT database files with new words/
definitions added, etc. Do you offer any type of "update" process for
the dictionary?

Thanks again for the app! Look forward to your response.

Dear "WC"

We are sincerely sorry for not replying to your message immediately. We had quite some activities going on, including holidays ;-)

1.) Thank you for your kind words of commendation. We are really glad that you like WM-Dict. We developed it for our personal needs and use it every day. Since we found it very useful four ourselves we thought of being generous and sharing it for free with others. Please feel free to "share the word" and introduce WM-Dict to others as well. The only requirement from our side is that the users register with us. But registration is free and is used only for creating our internal statistics.

2.) Concerning your question about any plans of adding a stroke-order animation feature to WM-Dict we are sorry to inform you that we do not plan to add this feature in the near future. We are currently working on an iPhone, iPad release of WM-Dict (under a different name). Furthermore we will probably release a new version of WM-Dict for Windows and Mac OS. Since we work on this project in our free time this will probably not happen before spring 2011. As soon as we have the Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad versions working stable we will be able to think about some new features. But frankly speaking, we are not sure whether we will have the time of creating such feature. We certainly understand the value of a stroke-order animation (since one of us is a Chinese-learner as well) but the greatest barrier to implement this feature is our lack of time. Therefore, please do not put too much hope into an eventual future stroke-order feature of WM-Dict. Still we added your request to our list of possible enhancements.

3.) For now, we do not offer an "update" feature. Whenever we create a new version of WM-Dict or the dictionary-files we will inform the registered users via email and provide them with the new download links. That way they can "update" the data on their devices.

Once more, thanks loads for your kind words. We wish that WM-Dict will prove to be a valuable tool for you in the future.

Your friends from

WM-Dict
