I was looking in Washington Square last week. 2k for apartments that are practically falling apart--counters chipped and broken, cabinets off of hinges, bathrooms that look like something out of saw.

Renters are at a huge disadvantage. For real.

Anyone else have any horror stories? We could make this a nice little "We Hate Landlords" piece.

I will say that condo owners are no better off, especially when your building is managed by a company that typically manages college student apartment buildings. The lack of a sense of urgency or responsibility is insane. Especially when we pay mortgages on top of condo fees. 1 week without heat in January without so much more than a note written in crayola marker on your front door. Thanks but no thanks.

I was lucky and had decent landlords when I rented. Not too hard to get a hold of. But my favorite was my apartment in mission hill. $2600 for a 3 bed that looked pretty at first glance, but was falling apart from the bottom up. We also got broken into, so that was fun. Had to go to trial, testify, the whole nine yards. Had feral cats living in the basement, a back porch that I think was breaking at least 3 building codes. Gotta love mission hill!

My apartment in college....

3rd floor of a three-decker. Barely a 4 bedroom... the 4th was literally a closet that fit a twin bed and a chair.

The back deck was at a 45 degree angle... not a glamorous design element.

The place was rented by a fraternity before we got there... had no idea... would not have signed the lease.
The tub was covered in 1/2" of scum... most disgusting thing I have ever seen. Took me 4 hours straight to clean it... I am gagging just thinking about it.
The people before us left, 3 couches, a sink full of dishes, a refrigerator/freezer and pantry filled with food.

The landlord did nothing.

He made us clean the entire apartment... and he provided a two person cleaning service that were only paid for 2 hours, but they felt so bad they worked for free to help us.

Later, we kept hearing a bunch of noise upstairs, constantly... I found out in a terrifying way that those noises were 3 racoons.

I was sitting on the 45 degree deck, and people across from me starting shouting "hey redhead", I thought they were hitting on me or something, so I ignored them. Until they started saying "get back into your house there are racoons on your deck!!!"

I will need to send the photo...if I can find it. Apparently the big one (of 3) was named Larry and the neighbors would chuck it hotdogs to eat.

Needless to say the place was a shit hole.

No counters. No cabinets. We did have a beautiful claw foot tub!

That was a long rant. Sorry.

Oh and we had a heard of mice living in all of the walls.... I swear they ran over my chest when I was asleep.

It was also $3000 per month.
