Today at Selkirk College Trails in Castlegar we saw Killdeer, Semi-palmated Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, Spotted Sandpiper, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and Solitary Sandpiper. The Sem-palms were in a small flock. The Kootenay River level is very high, the oxbow is flooded and there is hardly any mudflat to feed at, but this seems to be the best place for now to see shorebirds.

And at Nakusp too. At the mouth of the creek I had 3 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Baird's Sandpipers, 4 Least Sandpipers, 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 2 Killdeer and 4 Spotted Sandpipers.
Also had a female Common Merganser with 5 tiny young. Surprising to see a merg. with such young chicks this late in the season. Also surprising that she only had 5.

Further to the shorebird story, I spent just 10 minutes at Burton this morning. Certainly not sufficient time to check the whole area. But in those few minutes I saw Red-necked Phalarope, Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper, and Wilson's Snipe. The shorebirds are on the move!
