to West Kootenay Birds
Hi All,
In near hat stealing winds I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a flock of 16 Black-necked Stilts (the most I have ever seen at once) who were sheltering along the shore. Initially a rare sight many years ago they have become more regular as then pass through with detections each spring in our region. The most reliable place to see them is in Creston at Duck Lake where as many as 81 was seen at one time. Over on the west Arm and main body of Kootenay Lake the numbers are often more modest with 8 being the high count but more oft than not just a single bird is glimpsed. I haven’t seen this species at Sunshine Bay in Harrop since May 6th, 2022 and at that time it was a lonely single bird.
