Today, May 3, Carolee, Gaelen and I birded the Pend d'Oreille Valley's Westside, focusing on the Waneta-Nelway road. We were interested to see what new species had arrived. In just a week's time since our last visit, newly arrived were several Rufous and Calliope Hummers, a pair of Western Kingbirds, Northern Yellow Warblers, quite a few early Lazuli Buntings, Western Warbling and Cassin's Vireos, Barn, Cliff and Bank Swallows. Good raptor action too, with a Golden Eagle, Cooper's and Sharp-Shinned Hawks, American Kestrels and a Red-tail Hawk.
