Hi,

I noticed that some of the tariff rate results differ slightly for the TRAINS data compared to the WTO-IDB data, even when there aren't non-AVE tariffs included. Is this just due to differences in how the tariff rates are calculated by TRAINS and WTO?

Thank you.

Hi,

That's may be because the raw data from both databases are different. Did try to compare both data sets? Use Quick Search menu and select Tariff - View And Export Raw Data

Best regards,

Sam

Thanks. I tried to compare the two using the Advanced Search. The numbers for MFN tariff rates were similar, but for the effectively applied tariff rates there were some differences. Maybe it's due to the raw data or to data availability, trade years, etc. Which of the two data sources (TRAINS or WTO) is considered to have more accurate or reliable tariff data? The years that data is available for different countries differs for TRAINS and WTO, but I'm not sure if it makes sense to combine the datasets since it appears the tariff rates for the same year and country aren't exactly the same, so they may be calculated different.y.

Data from both databases (TRAINS and WTO IDB) are considered reliable. Therefore you can use one to fill in gaps for missing data in the other

sam, you said that "raw data from both databases are different." but who are the primary sources of each database?

One will have to look closely at the origin of the difference if you provide one example. The difference in the effectively applied tariff could be due to the fact that TRAINS may have preferential data while IDB has only MFN data.
