Thanks Jaysen.
I have to say that it is really hard to sympathise with this mass-
action approach to solving problems. At some point students have to
stop throwing 2 year old tantrums to get their way and grow up. While
the universities systems of assigning fee structures are fraught with
problems (from inconsistencies between student fees of 2 different
disciplines attending the same course code, to incorrect codes added
to student fee statements, and a fees office that is often rude and
understaffed) I'm not of the mindest that mass-action tantrums is the
way to go about it. I think that as postgraduates we are more adult
and should act as such in our approach. We also need to be realistic
that if we want a good quality education and systems that work, the
funding for it has to come from somewhere! Nothing is for free. We
complain that we don't get feedback from supervisors quickly enough,
but we are not prepared to pay a sent more for staffing. We complaing
that the lecture theaters are not the state-of-the -art that we see at
international universities, but we wont pay inflationary increases. I
think we are in a good position at the moment. Our fees are inflation
related, we have a new postgraduate hub on 4th floor, we have new
wireless connetivity in the WHSL and new statesticians to assist us. A
lot has happened in the last year. The faculty seems to be putting our
money and the governments money to good use!
OK, I'm also a staff member, but I'm doing a PhD and need the services
just as much as the next guy!
