Dear colleagues

We would like to inform (and, in some cases, remind) you of existing scholarship opportunities for research cooperation with institutions in Switzerland, particularly in the fields of

(1)    Public Health & Biomedicine,

(2)    Bio- & Nanotechnologies, and

(3)    Human & Social Sciences.

Out of the 16 projects currently funded, four involve Wits (three in Public Health & Biomedicine, one in Social Sciences). They are listed on http://internationalaffairs.unibas.ch/priority-countries/south-africa/joint-research-projects/.

For more details, please see the email and links below. Please disseminate the information within your schools. Thank you.

Sincerely

Subject: Funding for networking activities with Switzerland

Dear Samia Chasi,

As convened with Mr. Thaler during last week’s meeting at EAIE, I would like to briefly introduce you to the Swiss South African Joint Research Programme (SSAJRP).

The Swiss South African Joint Research Programme (SSAJRP) is a bilateral research cooperation programme, established in 2007 by the Swiss and South African governments. Jointly funded by both governments, the programme aims at promoting scientific and technological cooperation between Switzerland and South Africa.

In South Africa, SSAJRP is governed by the Department of Science and Technology (www.dst.gov.za) and coordinated by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (www.csir.co.za). On the Swiss side, SSAJRP is administrated by the State Secretariat for Education and Research (www.sbf.admin.ch). The University of Basel (www.unibas.ch), as the Swiss Leading House for South Africa, and the Swiss Tropical Institute (www.sti.ch), as the Associated Leading House, jointly assume coordination and management responsibilities for Switzerland.

Under the programme 16 Joint Research Projects have been granted for the funding period 2008-2011 in the priority research areas Public Health & Biomedicine, Bio- & Nanotechnologies, and Human & Social Sciences. Currently the programme is providing funds for Student and Faculty Exchanges as networking instruments between Switzerland and South Africa (2009/2010).

In addition to supporting exchanges between faculty and students of Swiss and South African institutes of higher education, the grants on offer can be used for the participation in joint scientific conferences, seminars, workshops, as well as joint summer or winter schools.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Further information on the grant and application forms can be found on the website of the University of Basel International Affairs:

http://internationalaffairs.unibas.ch/priority-countries/south-africa/exchanges/.

For questions or comments please contact Monika Kugemann, the International Affairs Assistant (monika....@unibas.ch).

Sincerely,

Monika Kugemann
