Dear all

FYI:

LECTURE BY CHEMSITRY NOBEL LAUREATE (1991)

Professor Richard Ernst (ETH, Zurich) will be visiting the Wits School of Chemistry and giving a public lecture in. This is going to be a general lecture aimed at a non-scientific audience, and the personal insights in his talk should be very exciting for us to hear about.

 Date:              Friday 22 January

Time:             14h15

Venue:          Room C9, Humphrey Raikes Building (more commonly known as the Chemistry Building)

Title:            My Pathway into Science and Beyond

 Abstract:

I will narrate parts of my life story.

My life was guided by a long sequence of lucky events that led to historical developments in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. The ups and downs, the fascination and the doubt balanced themselves. The overwhelming success of NMR in molecular biology and in clinical medicine came as a surprise. Many future developments can be expected, for example in exploring the detailed functioning of the brain.

Involvement in other aspects of life are essential for complementing activities in science. I will mention, as an example, my active interest in Central Asian art. The broadening of the interest of researchers beyond traditional science is necessary for shaping a beneficial future for our world. Universities that educate the future generations need also to develop novel concepts that will help us master the expected problems of our future.
