Dear all Postgraduate Students of the Faculty of Health Sciences
 
 
 
I would like to formally introduce myself as the 2009 Postgraduate Representative of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
 
I urge you all to please read the information below as there may be information of interest and/or importance to you.
 
Please take special note of the "E-mail Communication" section below. 
 
I currently sit in the executive committee (Exco) of the Postgraduate Association (PGA), not only as the postgraduate (PG) rep for the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), but also as the PG rep for the School of Pathology. My primary duty as the PG Faculty rep is to look after all PG matters of the 2000+ PG students of the FHS. I sit on a number of Faculty committee meetings where I address and respond to any aspects related to PG affairs, and most importantly represent you as the PG students.
 
Just to give you some information on the PGA...
 
What is the PGA?
 
The PGA is a student body defined in Section 1 of the Statute of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and is committed to representing and promoting the interests of postgraduate students of the University. It is guided and informed by the realisation of broad democratic participation, transparency, accountability, unity, service delivery and academic research excellence. 
 
How is the PGA structured?
  • The PGA is comprised of members, associate members and honorary members.
  • The Executive Committee (Exco) manages the PGA and is comprised of:
    1. Chairperson
    2. Deupty-chairperson
    3. Secretary
    4. Treasurer
    5. Liaison and Media Officer
    6. Five Faculty Reps
    7. International Students's Rep
    8. Local Students's Rep
    9. Research Students's Rep
    10. Coursework Students's Rep
    11. Residence Students's Rep

Who are members of the PGA?
 
Any person who is registered for postgraduate studies at the University, whether on a full-time or part-time basis, is an ordinary member of the PGA.
 
 
Where can you find the PGA?
 
The PGA offices were previously situated in the University Corner building. The PGA is currently relocating, and I'll keep you informed as to where their new premises will be.

E-mail communication
 
I've sent this e-mail to both your Wits e-mail address (studentnumber@students.wits.ac.za or staff e-mail) and your personal e-mail address as recorded on Wits's system. I strongly urge you all to link your Wits e-mail address to your personal e-mail address. This is the main means by which Wits communicates with all students, and they often send very important information/documentation to your Wits address.

To link/forward e-mails from your Wits address to your personal address:
 
Once logged into MyWits:
  1. Click on the "Options" tab
  2. "Mail" tab (below that)
  3. "Settings" (below that)
  4. See "Mail Forwarding" section
 
 
I hope that this gives you all at least some information about the PGA and it's activities. Please don't hesitate to contact me and your school reps if you have ANY concerns, complaints, queries etc. So please take some time to get to know your school reps! I will be in contact with you all regarding any further PG matters.
