To use a cheat code, press "Enter" during the game and enter one of the following codes below. After that, press "Enter" again to initiate the cheat. The codes are not case sensitive. Cheats that summon units and provide free resources are repeatable but those that affect certain units only require a single input. Cheats can be repeated continuously through copy and pasting which allows the player to initiate the same effect with minimal effort. This can be done by pressing "Ctrl C" after typing it out then repeating the action of "Ctrl V" after pressing "Enter". On older computers, players may need to right click and perform the task manually instead of using this shortcut method. Note that cheats are not available in the trial version.
Cheat codes that summon new units will always spawn at the Town Center and likewise will not be applicable to players without one. If a player has more than one Town Center, the unit will spawn near the one that was most recently built, and will continue to spawn there unless a new one is built or the current one is destroyed. The act of summoning cheat units is similar to the act of training new units from the Town Center. Consequently, if the Town Center is researching a new Age, the cheat unit cannot be spawned.
Cheats that affect certain units does not apply to enemy units converted by the player. To maximize combat potential, players should type the code before researching specific technologies that benefit that unit.
In the Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, entering cheat codes will not prevent the player from earning achievements, contrary to what happens in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition or Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition.
These cheat codes are only available in Return of Rome upon completing challenges during events in the Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, and cannot be acquired after the event concludes.
All of the cheat codes should work in every version of the game. Whether you're playing the original, its HD remake, or Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition, you should be able to activate any of the cheats you see in the full list below.

Cheats and the AOE series, including Age of Empires IV, have gone hand in hand. As the games gained in popularity the types of things you could do with a couple of the right codes became pretty weird and wonderful. From the simple and useful like turning off the Fog of War, to the downright bizarre like the ED-209 droids from Robocop, trike riding babies with shotguns, nuclear ballista bolt-firing soldiers, building crushing monster trucks, and many more weird and ridiculously overpowered units.
Cheats in Age of Empires became so popular and notorious that fans eagerly awaited each installment purely to see what sort of oddities and helpful hidden codes the developers had stuck in. Even though it took a few months, Age of Empires IV has now joined the ranks of its predecessors with a list of unlockable features that's not too wild but contains some nice callbacks to classic cheats that make them fun to use and easy to type in repeatedly. For those looking for the new codes, here are all of the Age of Empire IVs cheats and how to use them.
It's pretty easy to start messing with cheat codes in AOE IV. Thankfully, you don't need to go digging around in the game's file system or download external mods from third-party sites to get it running as it's all available from the game whenever you want it.
Unlike other games in the past where they were hard baked into the game, the cheat codes for Age of Empires IV came with an update nearly eight months after it launched. So now they're back and simpler than ever to play around with. It was an odd choice to leave their inclusion so late, but with so many other moving parts to fix in the game first, it's understandable why it took a little while for them to turn up.
Cheats arrived with the season three update, and to use them you'll need to launch a campaign or a skirmish match against the AI. Then go into the Game Mode window and check the box marked "Cheats".
Then as the game starts just hit "Enter" to open the chat, type in the code in lowercase as we've shown below, and that's it. If it doesn't work, check your casing and your spacing. The codes can be used at any time and as often as you like, so there's no limit to the chaos that you can cause.
The cheat codes you can play around with are pretty varied. There are some old and suitably odd favorites, like the laser-spewing Photon Trooper, instant build, god mode, and the ability to dump a massive bunch of resources in your civilization's bank account whenever you need them.
Plus, there are a few simple ones, like removing the map, and killing animals or highlighted units, though no code for instant win even though there is one to immediately lose the game. Some of these are also available in the campaign, whilst others are skirmish only. But we've marked down which cheat code works in what part of the game to streamline things somewhat.
