Thetask Garou face is one that is seemingly impossible, and beyond the characterization of them being violent creatures of Rage, they are extremely passionate in their goals. Goals vary from Garou to Garou, and whether they believe their purpose to be bringing Gaia back from the brink of death, fixing the balance of the Triat, or destroying the Wyrm and it's host; in the end, their emotional states are often affected by the challenging undertaking before them. To represent this endless battle, that may never be won are two trackers, harano and hauglosk. These values are represented by a five-box tracker, both of which start empty as the Garou has not experienced enough failure or turned jaded enough.[1]
Spending a scene or period of downtime with a Touchstone allows a character to move either harano or hauglosk from one tracker to the other. Whenever a Touchstone is lost as a result of the Garou's action or inaction, they automatically gain either a point of harano or hauglosk.[2] A Gaia's Tear can reduce one of these trackers by one.
As the Garou experiences setbacks and are otherwise made aware that their battle is a fruitless one, they slowly slide towards harano. When they reach harano, it is a state of hopelessness and the willingness to give up the battle for Gaia, where the Garou may abandon their Patron Spirit's Favor and Ban and sometimes even lose the ability to change forms at all. Harano is common among those in leadership roles and little by little even the most confident Garou can be filled with self-doubt.
Whenever a Garou faces a major setback, or one of their Touchstone(s) is put in danger or harmed due to the action or inaction of the Garou, the player makes a Harano test. This test is made with a dice pool equal to the amount of filled boxes on both the harano and hauglosk trackers, this does not use any Rage dice. The minimum amount of dice is always 1. The Difficulty is generally 1, but the Storyteller can decide if other factors increase it. If this test is failed, one box of harano is filled from right to left. Should this tracker ever be fully filled, the werewolf has succumbed to harano. Leaving the service of Gaia and its role as a player character.
In times of desperation, a player character can willingly fill one box of harano to increase their Rage to 5. This can only be done once per session, and the Storyteller can prohibit this if playing in a limited one-shot story.[1]
There is a state where Garou have succumbed to the fanatical devotion of their cause, losing all compassion and mercy know as hauglosk. Each time they disregard consequences and let the ends justify the means, they slide closer to it. Hauglosk, however, is not a state of mindless rage though it may result in that outcome. Garou impacted by it, will generally undertake actions without regard of the consequences, fueled by the need to do something, anything at all. This is a long-term ongoing state and many Garou never come out of it.[3]
Whenever a Garou violates a chronicle Tenet, they must make a Hauglosk test. This test is made with a dice pool equal to the amount of filled boxes on both the harano and hauglosk trackers, this does not use any Rage dice. The minimum amount of dice is always 1. The Difficulty is generally 1, but the Storyteller can decide if other factors increase it. If this test is failed, one box of hauglosk is filled from right to left. Should this tracker ever be fully filled, the werewolf has succumbed to hauglosk. Turning into an unredeemable fanatic and a Storyteller character.
In times of desperation, a player character can willingly fill one box of hauglosk to restore all Willpower damage. This can only be done once per session, and the Storyteller can prohibit this if playing in a limited one-shot story.[4]
