I'm so excited that I had to let everybody know the news just
confirmed: Starhawk is coming to Wisteria Summer Solstice 2009 as our
featured keynote speaker!
From her website: Starhawk is one of the most respected voices in
modern earth-based spirituality. She is also well-known as a global
justice activist and organizer, whose work and writings have inspired
many to action. She is the author or coauthor of ten books, including
The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great
Goddess, long considered the essential text for the Neo-Pagan
movement, and the now-classic ecotopian novel The Fifth Sacred Thing.
Starhawk's newest book is The Earth Path: Grounding Your Spirit in the
Rhythms of Nature.

As most of you know, a main work here at Wisteria is to integrate
spiritual practice with real earth-based action in a joyous,
celebratory way. We asked Starhawk to come as her blending of earth
activism and earth spirituality resonate so well with what we are
growing here along with all of you as we cross-pollinate communities
to produce vigorous strains of People of the Earth (or something like
that).
I'm very excited to welcome Starhawk as she is a dynamic woman who has
dedicated her life to bring acceptance for many of us on a national
level. She was instrumental in the early feminist movement and is
also a devoted peace activist and organizer. I think this is a
fantastic and rare opportunity to listen to an experienced and wise
elder.
We are still working on details. So far, we have planned for her to
arrive mid-week and stay a couple days or so. Her keynote address
will probably be on the topic of blending spiritual practice with
environmental action (specific topic to be announced). In addition,
there will be a book signing. We are still working on her itinerary
and will tell you when more details firm up.
Also, with M. Macha Nightmare, she wrote the book "The Pagan Book of
Living and Dying." This is a fantastic, well-written book on the
subject of alternative burial/memorial practices and is one of my
favorites. Check out her bookstore on her site for a complete list if
you want to read up before the Solstice.
Presently, she is holding permaculture certification courses (another
great topic for these times!) and is a panelist on a website about
religion sponsored by The Washington Post and Newsweek. With so many
topics to chose from her extensive list of offerings, it will be
difficult to narrow down what she might share with us!
So that's the scoop, folks. We're thrilled and honored to prepare for
her visit. I don't think she visits the Midwest much (if at all) so
let your friends know about this exciting happening.
Registration for the Solstice is now up at
www.wisteria.org . We're
still working on a lot of things with more to come. We will have more
to share as 2009 rolls in.
Cheers, Charlene
