Wisconsin Science Matters

Hello Science Education Leaders,

Below are the latest science education resources and opportunities I've heard about.  Please, let me know if you have any questions about the topics in this email or if I can come out and support science work in your district.

If you have announcements to share about science or STEM-related professional learning and resources, please send them my way for the next edition. A record of these emails can be found on my website: dpi.wi.gov/science/social-media

Cheers,
Kevin

http://www.nsta.org/conferences/sessions/meetingsacceptingabstracts.aspx - In the 2017-18 school year there will not be a traditional Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers (WSST) annual conference. Instead on Nov 9-11, 2017, WSST is partnering with NSTA to support the NSTA Area Conference in Milwaukee. Please, consider submitting a proposal to present at this conference - strands include connecting STEM and NGSS, connecting elementary science and literacy, and supporting equity in science. Submissions are also being accepted for this spring's WSST conference - http://bit.ly/2e6UXtL
  • Junior Science and Humanities Symposium - Intent to submit due Oct 17th
http://www.uwlax.edu/conted/jshs/invitation-letter/ - Get your students engaged with in-depth research projects (very NGSS aligned). You must submit an intention to submit a project by Oct 17th, with research papers due at the end of November and the event in Tomahawk in January.

  • Wisconsin Science Festival - Cadaver Lab Field Trip at Medical College of WI

Cadavers as Educators at The Medical College of Wisconsin, on Friday, October 21st, 2016. Sessions at 10am-Noon and 1pm-3pm. Cadavers as Educators maximizes the educational value of body donors (cadavers) as medical students deliver an innovative, hands on curriculum to visiting high school students. We leverage our knowledge of anatomy & physiology to encourage healthy behaviors as well as promote health careers among visiting students.  Students will have the opportunity to learn about health behaviors and then see a number of cadavers to better understand the human body and progression of disease. Pre-registration for this event is required. Teachers should email Tim Sobotka (tsob...@mcw.edu) to register their students.
