Antarctica News
Jim Madsen will deploy to Antarctica with two UWRF students, Dylan Frikken and Samantha Pedek, leaving the USA on December 30, 2016 and returning about January, 26 2017. You can follow their adventure by reading posts at https://i3uwrf.wordpress.com/.
Two high school teachers will be deploying as well with funding from the NSF PolarTREC program. Eric Thuma (https://www.polartrec.com/member/eric-thuma) will work with Jim and colleagues from the University of Delaware and Korea on the neutron monitor project on the coast of Antarctica at McMurdo Station. Kate Miller (https://www.polartrec.com/member/kate-miller) will be at the South Pole working at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.
Keep an eye out for announcements for webcasts from Antarctica that you can join (https://icecube.wisc.edu/outreach/webcasts). Presentations are scheduled on December 7, 2016, and January 9 and 19, 2017 so far.

Want a different perspective on living and working in Antarctica? Check out these blogs by people supported by the NSF Artist and Writers program. Maris Wicks writes educational comics, and is currently at McMurdo Station. His blog (http://www.mariswicks.com/blog/) has great photography and illustrations.
Donald Fortescue is heading for the ice soon, leaving the USA on Friday, December 2, 2016. You can see the incredible craftsmanship of his artistic science instrument and travel with him vicariously as he sets it up to collect data at the South Pole via his blog (http://www.donaldfortescue.com/antarctica).

Outside My Window: A Look at the Oakwood Village Nature Preserve
By Robert Greenler

Many of us have crossed paths with Dr. Greenler through his seemingly lifelong membership in WAPT, his steady leadership of "The Science Bag" at UW-Milwaukee, or through his previous books "Rainbows, Halos and Glories" and "Chasing the Rainbow: Recurrences in the Life of a Scientist". Hi newest book I would describe as essays from an observational scientist, and reminded me as I read it that we can all see wonderment and beauty in the science we see around us.

Physics/Astronomy 335/535
Demonstration and Laboratory Techniques in Physics
University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh
Spring 2017 (3 credits)
Physics/Astronomy 335/535 is a dual-level course for prospective and practicing teachers on classroom technology, hands-on activities/laboratories, and demonstrations (grades 6-12). Participants will be exposed to the model-centered method of instruction for physics and physical science, and learn to write successful grants to obtain new classroom technology. The course meets Monday evenings, 6-10 p.m., Feb – April, 2017. (Daycare by arrangement.) Prerequisite: A one-year university course in algebra-based physics.
Physics 335/535 is taught by Dr. Mark Lattery, professor of physics and author of Deep Learning in Introductory Physics (Information Age Publishing, 2016). Dr. Lattery has worked in teacher professional development for nearly 20 years, and is currently the President of the Wisconsin Association of Physics Teachers.
