Stuck damper slider

I’m guessing it’s rust, but the spring handle is stuck, and the damper is stuck.  I’ve tried banging to release it… tried loosening it when it’s hot…. What do I do?  Help!

I have a GW1949, so this may not apply to your stove at all. 

But, if my damper door was stuck, I would try this:

1) when stove is cold,

2) twist the spring handle to loosen the damper,

3) pull out the burn basket assembly (maybe vacuum any ash while you’re in there)

4) through the now empty burn chamber, see if the damper door can be reached with something long (a large dowel, a crowbar, etc)

5) put that "something long” thing against the closest edge of the damper door and give the thing a whack or two with a hammer.

With any luck, beating on the damper door through the burn chamber will knock it loose. My stove is fired up at the moment, so I can’t check to see if this actually possible. I hope it is and this works for you.

I had the same thing at the beginning of this season after the stove sat unused the whole summer. I used a vise grip to clamp onto the handle and twisted that until it broke loose. It still isn't as free-turning as it used to be, but at least now I can slide the draft all the way closed and open. Hope this helps!
