There are two critical elements to SEO. One is to find the right search terms so that you can identify the best traffic sources to direct to the website and the other criteria is to ensure that the techniques you use to get the website onto page one of Google (or other search engines) is done in such a way (also known as ‘white hat’) that Google will not penalise your site. If the site gets penalised it can prove very costly and sometimes virtually impossible to nurse it back to health.
