Fixed Width Barcodes?

Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a fixed width barcodes?
Basically we are generating our barcodes based upon our suppliers
product id's , but because our suppliers all have different character
lengths for their id's , the barcode on our label expands and
retracts.
Is there such a thing as a fixed width barcode, so that the barcode
number could be either '012345' or '01234567890' and both barcodes
would have the same width on the label?

(Without having to use 2D barcodes)
