Well, Developers at Amazon decided that "Smart Home" means only turning something on / off or raising or lowering temperature. So you cannot have Alexa give you any information back if you develop for their "Smart Home" skills. Let me know if you see ANY skill under the "Smart Home" category that can have Alexa give you back any information other than the temperature you already set.

If you instead develop for their "regular" skills, you must supply Amazon with a list of all possible terms to recognize. This list is completely STATIC and is not PER end-user account. We have 10k+ users and we just found that there are more than 50k+ different names people have given to their tags. So, even if we give Amazon a list of that 50k names (large number in the list will lower the voice recognition accuracy) Alexa will stop working as soon as you change the name of a tag.
ONLY "Smart Home" skills can have Alexa recognize from a per end-user list of terms (tag names).

Are there any commands to check on reed switch status?   I was hoping I could ask Alexa if the garage door was open or closed.

Thanks!
