Hi,
John, how common it was in your playtests to finish a game of C&NW without triggering a single common dividend?
We just played our first game, a three-player game, and I managed to win the game before the first dividend. The game ended when all specials were played; I had bunch of money from an earlier special dividend that paid $90 and hadn’t spent it, unlike my opponents.
An opponent should’ve played a dividend card, but he played the second-to-last special, allowing me to trigger the final special (in order to do that, I had to put the red shares on sale for three rounds in a row, before I could win one), winning the game hands down. I had ~$100, which was more than my opponents combined.
I gather this is way more likely to happen in a three-player game.
In any case, we were duly impressed. If our time hadn’t been up, we’d played a second game right away. Last year Southern Rails felt a bit odd in not so good way, but this time Harry has created something really cool - C&NW is odd and quite unlike any other Winsome game I’ve played so far, and in a very positive sense. Well done.
