Hi Pierre,

first of all - I think WinPython is an awesome idea. The no-installation, portability and the ease of installing/uninstalling packages (great selection!) will make it so much easier to get started for many new users.

However, I would vote for ceODBC instead of/next to adodbapi as the default database interface. I've inserted 20000 rows into my local SQL Server 2012 database and these are the times I got:

- ceODBC: 0.43 sec
- pyodbc: 5.2 sec
- adodbapi: 172 sec

thanks
- Felix

AFAIK, none of these libraries is included in WinPython -- and I'm not
familiar at all with ODBC (my database experience is quite limited...
and I think that for most users, the sqlite bindings included in
Python standard library should be sufficient).
So what you mean is that, if someday I want to include an ODBC-related
library, that should be ceODBC, is that right?

well, you have adodbapi included with WinPython...so I thought this was your choice. But it's no problem at all, since I can easily install ceODBC (even though it's installer is not compatible with with the WPCP).

Really, there is adodbapi?
I don't have a computer around with WinPython but I'm sure that I did not include this package intentionally. Maybe the installer of another package has installed this package silently. I'll check it out.

Ok, after a quick search, I found out that adodbapi is included in
pywin32 package. So that's why it's in WinPython without me noticing
about it.

Hello Felix,

I am actually interested to install ceODBC.

But you said it is an .msi file therefore not possible to install via the control panel.

I have tried to install it without, but was unsuccessful so far.

Can you describe how you did it ?

Thanks

Hi Julien,

Just run the installer. If you have registered WinPython in the registry, then it will find it by itself, otherwise choose "Python from another location" and select the folder with WinPython in it.
