50 sideboard cards
I originally thought about going BR with G to fix the mana and for
some creatures, but Green didn't have the beef and the Black and Red
seemed like support colours. I like Nameless Inversion and
Eyeblighter's Ending for removal, but not enough to try and win with
the Goblin Tribe that I opened. None of those colours seemed to mesh.
My white had even less depth I thought, with no Oblivion Ring,
Neckbreak or many good tricks.
So what did I do. I put in all of my Blue Cards. ALL of them. I filled
it out with some Red Removal and a few creatures, then splashed
white for the Avian Changelings.
Some of the cards were definitely suboptimal(I almost always sided out
Needle Drop for whatever I thought that I should bring in(but then
again I was playing all of my Blue cards and all of my Red removal so
I rarely had anything to side in)). I have nothing to make Ceaseless
Searblades' ability useful, he was just a body with a butt to help me
survive for a bit. I could have tried to use him more by going the
elemental route, but they did not seem like they could survive mid to
late game. Lowland Oaf has an actual usable ability in my deck but I
decided that having the 4 on the end was more meaningful.
I suppose that I could have used the poultice, but I felt I had better
uses for the mana.
I think I only used the Consuming Bonfire once or twice because I had
too, but it seems like it was good. Tarfire and Tar Pitcher were
great. Planeswalkers are just cheater cards so you should play them
whenever you get the chance. Then there were my little boggarts, they
were great as 2 drops and fed the Tar Pitcher. And of course there was
clash.
I like clash, in limited at least. It was one of the reasons that I
chose not to play the Shimmering Grottos. I sometimes didn't even care
if I won the clash, I just wanted to see if it was a land or not to be
able to ship to the bottom. I was able to keep several 2 landers on
the play(and a fantastic 1 lander on the draw that my opponent
conceded on turn 3) just because of clash. I think if I were going to
play 17 land a Grotto would have been it, but it seemed like it would
slow me down. A Vivid Land and a Twig(and Clash) were enough to carry
me through any rough spots and I had no real mana issues(maybe once or
twice having the Cryptic Command in hand with 2 Islands. Oh yeah, I
also had a few Merfolk Fixers/Island Makers to boot and that helped.
So what I turned out to have was a wicked little Merfolk Deck that
could vary between beatdown and controllish feels. I could get out
early fish on the board and they all seemed to have fantastic
abilities. Fix with the Mystic, Defense with the Silvergill(the reason
for the Fairies and the Changelings, other than the obvious evasion
capabilities) and Angler, pump with the Aquitects, and Island
walk(sometimes courtesy of my mana fishies) with the divers(who also
helped me set up great draws and timely clash wins. I get any
combination of defense/offense down and I drop the Merrow Commerce it
was over. Untap all my dudes with abilities after I have used them to
own you...sure. Then it was really mean with the Drowner. The one land
hand I kept on the draw went turn one Mystic, turn two Commerce, turn
three Drowner. How bout I mill you for 3 on my turn, untap for defense
or just mill you for 3 more. I probably milled my opponent out 40% of
the time, usually at 5 or less life(on several of those occasions it
was at 1 life). My beatdown was me just turning quick evasive/walking
fishies sideways before my opponent could get a chance for defence.
Top that off with a Planeswalker and most people conceded.
I liked the Captivating Glance in this deck since it had so many clash
mechanics going into it already on top of the mill ad stacking
effects. I was able to pull off a major coup when my opponent wrecked
my team when I had to gang block and he dropped the +5/+5 Trample
Flash Enchantment on it. I had just cast the Divers(and had to block)
so I know what was coming up, stoel his 7/9(he also had the Rune??
Equipment on it)then on my next turn dropped the Aethersnipe to return
the enchantment to my hand so I could keep his guy indefinitly. That
was just rude of me, but I was at 5 and had to do it.
All in all, the tricks in this deck were so strong, Whether it be
wrecking plans with a key Cryptic Command, Bouncing with the snipe to
get through for the win, or using the Whirlpool to put their Bomb on
top of their library where my fishies could then ship it to the yard,
the cards gave me so many options and opportunities to win games that
I probably should not have.
Oh yeah, and did I mention Planeswalkers were cheater cards?
I am currently in 13th place(with 12 tiebreaker points) out of 256
Players(the guy in first has played over 60 matches, I just don't have
that sort of time with the boys around) and my record is 11 - 0. Only
twice did it eve go to game 3. I know that I am not that good,
especially when I am playing 2 of my matches while running the YGO
Sneak Preview, and the cards carried me a lot, but I don't know that
they are an undefeated caliber cardpool. What do you guys think?
Sorry about the lengthy post, but I can't get to sleep and there is no
one in the league room to give me my first loss.
As Always,
