This message is to inform you on the results of the WINDFARMperception
project that is now concluded with the publication of the final report.
The WINDFARMperception project aimed to investigate the perception of wind
farms by residents living close to the wind farms. The study consisted of a
survey amongst residents in the Netherlands and detailed calculations of the
aural and visual exposure.
The main finding is that the noise of
modern wind farms is the prime negative effect on residents in their
vicinity. A positive result is that the same noise does not affect residents
that have an economical benefit from the wind turbines even though most of
them live closer to the turbines than residents do without these benefits.
We expect that the results of the study will be useful to gain a better
understanding of the different views on wind farms that are expressed in the
public arena. A summary of the project, the final report and a press
statement can be downloaded from www.rug.nl/wewi. Later more information on the
project will be presented there and a computer program will be made
available for free to calculate the exposure form wind turbines.
The project is a co-operation of the Universities of Groningen (NL) and
Gothenburg (S) and the University Medical Centre Groningen (NL) and
started in January 2007. The project was financed by the European Union in
its Science and Society Program.
Best wishes
Geoff
