I have a storage issue on my XP laptop. I am sitting around 1 gb of
free space but the amount changes for no apparent reason. It will go
down to .4 gb and up to 2 gb without me saving any new files. I know
there are processes that add files but I don't understand why I can
get a space warning, turn the system off and have close to 2 gb of
free space when I turn on again.

I found a lot of old, 2009, files in Windows. I have 144 /Windows/
K*.log files and 24 /Windows/temp/av*.tmp from 2009. I can safely
remove those files can't I?

I don't have these type of problems with an old Windows ME laptop,
i.e. small disk, that I squeezed Linux into.

Try using CCleaner from Piriform, ita a freeware.U may lose auto complete and some other non-critical settings if you dont configure it properly.

One doesn'nt need to save files to lose disc space, the virtual memmory / pagefiles and temp files created while running programmes could do it. Eg: editing a huge image file in Photoshop, or running a browser with a lot of tabs open..

Linux is getting better day by day, but one still has to find some time to invest for learning it.I use ArtistX, almost all usable programms are inbuit in it.

Thank you for the tip on CCleaner .

I still don't understand this OS. Before I shutdown yesterday I had .
9 gb when I booted up today I had
4 gb of space. That seems to be a lot of space for system usage.
Also yesterday when I booted up I had about 1.8 gb so what is going on
just seems strange. Then there is the cpu scheduler it seems to just
be FIFO.

I was using Unix systems long before Windows so I have a very small
learning curve with Linux. I was just commenting on how much cleaner
it seems as opposed to Windows.

When ever I have a problem with XP, which is not under my technical to solve or diagnose, or closed for some others to diagnose, i just run the "upgrade" using the same XP installation disc. its relaces most of the system files, (at the cost of some usefull settings we have made) and its back to normal usually. Its not the 'automated system recovery' seen as the xp installer loads, but the 'upgrade' option available once the pre-existing win XP instalaltion is recognised by the XP installer.

On the pther hand, u can try disabling  "hybernation" under desktop > propertes > power > advanced.
try cleaning off memmory dumps with CCleaner..
System TuneUp is a much more advanced optimiser, it has some few-days trial to check it with full functionality.

In my part of the world, FOSS OSes are the trend, and service is readily available. The Govt policy is to support FOSS platforms and technology, and FOSS is part of academic curriculum since primary classes. ilu...@googlegroups.com is a mailing list where most queries regarding desktop FOSS systems are addressed with passion.

I know what you mean. I have seen that happen with XP heaps. No real
explanation but the pagefile.sys and hiberfile.sys files are certainly
worth considering. As far as freeing up disk space, deleting user
profile/temp files and windows temp files and prefetch files should
give you some extra room. You can also clear out your system restore
points if you have system restore enabled.

If you think XP is bad for this, how about Vista. Vista uses the VSS
(volume shadow copy service) to store restore points and system
backups etc. this feature chews up disk space (as it will use 15
percent of total drive capacity or 30 percent of free disk space,
whichever is less). But I think your point is more about the
fluctuations in free space reported by Windows. On that point, I would
have to agree.

Maybe measuring the free space with a third party tool would be a
better guide as to which of the variuos readings you are getting is
correct.
