Hi all.
I need to install Windows XP Home on a logical partition: is it
possible? I searched on the web but I found different opinions...
I'll try to explain my scenario in the clearest way is possible:

I have a laptop with a SATA disk. On this disk I installed linux (3
partitions). Because one of these fills all the remaining space on
disk, I resized it with GParted, a linux-based tool to manage disk
parititions.

Now I have to install Win XP. So I run the cd installation (loading
external sata drivers), and I choose to create a new partition in the
free space but I found an error says that I can't create a new
partition in the free space because I reached the limit of partitions
on the disk.

So I run again GParted and created a new extended partition with a
logical partition inside (without formatting) and re-execute Windows
installation. This time the error tells me that the partition chosen
in not recognized by Win XP. Same errore even if I format the
partition in NTFS.

If I format the partition in FAT32, the error is this (I translate
from italian, so it could be different from the english versions
error):
"To install Windows XP in the selected partition is necessary to add a
boot file in this disk:
152626 MB Disk SCSI 0, Id 0, bus 0, on Unknown [MBR]
but this disk doesn't contains a Windows XP compatible partition"
The error continues saying to create a valid partition or to delete an
existing partition and create a new one compatible with Win XP

Where is the problem? What could I do to make the installation runs
correctly?

Thanks a lot

Luca, am not good in this field, the following could be somewhat realted to this issue think :

Not more than 4 primary partitions are possible in a disk in MBR mode.
XP do not recognise a HDD with GPT partition disc (more than 4 primary partitions are possible in this mode) but linux / PC-Mac does.
XP do not recognise a HDD if the BIOS is "native sata" mode ENABLED

To boot into Linux partitions after windows installation, you may neeed to re-install GRUB again.
If a permanent GRUB installation is not immediatley possible because of any issue, you can use SuperGrub disc to boot into ur lost OS in any partition.(very small bootable ISO GNU GPL download).

Please post how you accomplished installing windows in logical drive..

XP wont install on a logical partition it has to be primary and drive
C: for some reason XP has to be drive c cause some of the programs
refuse to install on drive D:. you have a few choices the first is a
step by step installation procedure document which explain step buy
step how to install Linux and XP in the same partition using GRUB boot
loader which I will email you. or you can wipe out your drive and
install XP in the first partition then Linux in the second Partition
using WUBI it will do all the necessary boot loader edits then when
boot screen shows up it will display 2 operating system. Dave

First of all thank you for replying... :)
Sorry for the delay in my replying but I had a lot of work to do...

livewire, thanks for the guide, it's a very precious document..

So, guys I had to leave my idea to install win xp on a logical
partition... :(

Now, I run again GParted and built a new primary partition, formatted
as FAT32.
I started with xp cd, and finally it recognize the partition as a
correct
format..Then I could format as NTFS and continue the installation.
It's still running...

After that I'll try to fix grub and configure dual boot...

Thank you very much nishandh and livewire for the support...

Have a nice day

Luca

I distinctly recall that I did once manage to install XP on a drive/
partition other than C: I think it was on F: or G: or something like
that. I cant remember how it happened but it wasnt by design. I
remember I decided to reinstall XP again to correct the issue because
it looked so strange. I cant recall the circumstances exactly but if
you google the issue, you will see that it has happened to mnay
others. Here is one example: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/9436-45-installed-drive
