Downgrade to XP from Vista Basic ?

hi,
Is there a way to downgrade to an XP version from a Genuine Vista Basic thru any Online means ?
the exact scenario :
The Windows OS that came with the laptop was Win Vista Basic, which I lost during Hardisk upgrade.
[and I dint yet claim an OS disc as the system is out of warranty date.] I still have the bills, and genuine windows label with serial number on laptop.
Can I downgrade to an XP version version online ?
If nothing else is possible, Can I apply my existing serial number on a downloaded (unaltered) version of Win Vista Basic ?
