On a Win Server 2008 R2 SP1 (64bit) server i can't get an memory stick
or external harddrive to work. I have tried removing all the usb
drivers etc and restarting and then plugging them in again to both
front and back of server. All that happens is that in device manager
the yellow alert symbol appears and I’ve tried to update windows
drivers etc but still no luck. This used to work and i don't know if
this issue is since i ran SP1. Is it something to do with usbstor file
or any ideas??

Thanks
Ray

Ray,

Ray,

I had this problem with W7 stations, and some servers. But what I noticed that in some seasons the device plugged in my other not. My device already had several years of use. I opened it and cleaned the connectors and function normally again. I believe it can be poor contact of the device with the USB input. Try to verify this and if possible connect your devices in the new stations (and this problem should not occur, which further reinforces what I'm talking about here). If there is try to clean the connectors or cable connection if (in case of external unit) replace the cable.

driver installed on this server is correct? Any device works on this server? If yes to both these questions, perhaps cleaning the connector server.

I remember that Windows systems generally work with standard USB driver for all devices. I also believe in bad contact.

I cleaned all the contacts again with air pressure and still now joy..i restarted the server and removed the usb cable and then when it started i plugged in the usb and it detected the external harddrive...then i restarted the server without moving anything and i have the same issue again...in device manage is shows the warning symbol for USB Mass Storage Device and in the properties it says The device cannot start (Code 10)

Any other ideas?

Thanks Ray.

it detects the external drive at startup and the system does not detect?

you attempt to do some initialization for the external HD? to see if it is working effectively? Put a USB CD drive and run a linux live, for example.

this gives an idea if it is complete with the functions .... USB is showing as code 10, means she is trying to read, but failed ...

Tell me then, if it worked for USB boot

It is using the windows OS driver...i have ran a windows update and it tells me it has the latest driver...I'll try and see does it see the hard drive from the bios..I'd say it does...for some reason the windows OS won't detect it..

I talked with some friends ... who reported the following:
They had this kind of problem with Windows XP SP 2 and Windows 7. They cleaned the connectors on the USB though, but not resolved.
Removed a device manager, all USB storage, the station resumed soon after to reinstall Windows itself that the original drivers. Reported that some returned to work and those who have not worked, in fact, not installed, and opted to install a USB PCI card in the stations, solving the problem.

Indeed, update drivers and try to run a boot from USB to see if it is funcioando, but this tip is more. I emphasize that I did not test this, since my problem was solved the way first.

I have checked if the usb external hard drive is detected in the bios and it is.

But when in windows i am still having the same issue...i have also tried to put in a usb connection that splits the usb into 4 usb and this isn't detected either in device manager.. however i have a usb printer that is detecting fine on all the ubs ports on the server..

Where can i get an updated driver?

Thanks

From what has been said, it's just driver problem. I recommend you look first at the site of the manufacturer of the product, and if it fails to find .... Microsoft site to see if there is a compatible driver that needs to use.
