How can I configure the mail program to leave messages on the server
after they are transferred into the mail program?

Are we talking about Windows Live Mail or Outlook?

Windows Live Mail -- which as I understand from my novice
experience, is the only program that comes with Windows 7.

Thanks. I don't see a setting for that in Windows Live Mail. There IS a
provision for it in Outlook's mail account settings, however. That's why I
asked.

Thanks for looking, Steve.

An alternative would be to set up WLM to access your mail via IMAP instead
of POP. That keeps everything hosted on the server, and you sync your mail
client with it each time you go online to check your mail. It's not the
best choice IMHO for most people but it will serve to keep your messages in
both locations at the same time.

Indeed, not the best choice. Not to mention that the program
has no provision -- that I can find -- to import the data
from my Tbird in the XP system. I'm seriously considering
installing Tbird in W7 as well.

That would have been my other recommendation.

One thing that does work, although it's a major pain in the tuckus, is to
set up an IMAP account for your email account, then copy your messages from
the POP account into the folders in your IMAP account. (Yes, you can have
both a POP and IMAP account configured for the same email account, assuming
your mail host supports both protocols.) Once the messages have been copied
there, you can set up an IMAP account in Windows Live Mail and transfer the
messages back down into a local folder structure.

Do you follow my thinking here?

I appreciate the confirmation, Steve. All I want is to
reduce/simplify my reliance on electronics.
