This page is for both GT and Academic IELTS reading. The question types are the same for both tests and all the techniques are the same as well. So, please use all my reading lessons and tips regardless of which test you are taking.

Below are practice reading lessons to help you develop reading skills for IELTS. They are not IELTS tests. These reading exercises have been designed by myself to provide free practice materials for you. Some of the exercises are easy and some are more difficult so that students of all levels can practise.

- study key vocabulary - if it's Academic IELTS you're doing, check out the AWL (Academic Word List) = these words are extremely common in academic texts and they always come back, regardless of the topic.


- fast reading: (a) practise reading "in chunks" (not word by word, but trying to take in a few words at a time, e.g. a clause or a prepositional phrase) (b) timed reading - every day, take 30 lines from a random text, time yourself reading them, then cover and try to recall main points (c) make sure you are familiar with the skimming / scanning techniques; often you don't really need to read the whole text to get the answers to some questions


- be extra careful when questions contain words such as: "always", "every", "the most", "the only", "main", etc. Double check if the reason they're asking you, for example, is really the main reason, or perhaps only one of the reasons.

In many ways, IELTS Reading is more of a vocabulary test than a reading test. The reason is that you need a wide range of vocabulary to understand the passages of text given to you. You must also be aware of synonyms and paraphrasing if you wish to identify the information required to answer the questions correctly.


In this IELTS Reading question, you will be given a list of incomplete sentences with no endings and another list with possible endings. Your job is to match the incomplete sentences with the correct ending based on the reading text.

The IELTS Reading section evaluates a range of reading abilities. Although the question formats remain the same across both the Academic and General Training versions, the types of texts differ.
