Wow.  BIG day at Carlyle yesterday.  5 kiters & 5 windsurfers all launched from Harbor Lights.  Wind was side/onshore and filled in all day.  When I arrived at 12:30 the Clinton Lake Kiters were all on the water (Moyers/Hugh).  Hans, Larry, Chad, Dan & myself windsurfed.  Probably the steadiest high wind I've seen at Carlyle in a long time.  Wind in the middle of the lake was well into the 30's at its peak.  There were many long high speed runs through "The Mogul Field".  Had to be carefull navigating the large rollers especially coming back, since you were heading towards them.  With the bay filled in, it also made for some fun high speed inside jibes.   After 1:30 Juan and a new kiter, David showed up.  David is from Dallas, but will be spending 6 months here on business.  David was impressed with the launch and surprised how strong the wind was.  I told him that was very typical of Carlyle.   There was also a lost but found kite board, and  a 9-11 call for a missing kiter. (That's for another posting) But it all ended up well.  When I left at 6:30 the wind was still cranking.  GREAT DAY.

Stay tuned for another clever saying.  As soon as I think of one.  Might be a while....

Agree this was one of the best days with most consistent wind in
recent years...totally fulfilling. This is why we love the sport and
yesterday erased the memory of at least 3 frustrating sessions. Got
totally dialed in on my 4.1 and in my zone, only 5 days after a great
session at Smithville. The big chop and rollers in the 3-5 ft range
made the blistering speed runs...um...challenging...causing some scary
wipe-outs. Some of the strongest wind (& flatter water) was again
found at the other side in the NE corner, near the Boulder shore,
which was strange since it was more offshore there. We should look at
launching there sometime on S or SW.

I did want to note that there are places that are 4-5 ft deep near the
"silo" 2/3 of the way to Boulder...some as far as 300-400 yds S and SW
of it! You can tell it's getting shallow because the chop gets short
but steeper. Just be careful when falling to KEEP YOUR LEGS BENT..a
good habit on any fall. Also I HIT 5 FISH, which is more than I've
hit my entire life! This proves that I was breaking the sound
barrier, so they couldn't hear me coming!

It was great to see so many sailers & kiters; hope we get another
great session this season.

Although I'm relatively new to sailing at Harbor in small sail conditions, I was also bowled over by how the lake was remarkably filled in and very big.  I too had 3 fish strikes.  One was a glancing blow that I was able to sail through, but 2 were 'full stop' implosions.   Hearing that you hit quite a few also makes me blame my big dumb fin less, and fault the quantity of fish in the lake more.  The 5.2 Hellcat on the 145L Tabou was a great combination for me until about 2/3's thru the session when the base winds snuck up just enough to make it unmanageable in the the 'middle bigness'.  When I went back out on the 4.5 Atlas, I had many ethereal runs weaving thru the fully formed swell that had me grinning ear to ear.  Unfortunately I had to cut the session short when I noticed that the nose of my board had sustained some front end damage most likely from one of my many mast drops.  This has me thinking that a deviator might not be so terrible an addition to my kit in large rolly conditions.  I also have to reluctantly admit that a 145L board was something of a 'misapplication of boat' in such conditions -I was surprised to be yearning for the 95L Fanatic FreeWave's that worked so well at Lake Arenal, Costa Rica.   Truly a dream day out there.

I hit BIG fish at CC lake with my Hobie Cat & had fish explosions!!!  I have also had some fish land on the trampoline & flop around.  I need to get that on video sometime.

Here's the Cliff Note's version of the 9-11 call.  Kiter Ken Moyer took off across the lake looking for his son who was also kiting.  His son had decided to head up wind for a mile or so, something Ken didn't realize.  When he arrived at the opposite shore, with no sign of his kid, he called 9-11.  By that time his son was back at Harbor Lights looking for Ken, who was on the other shore.  Rangers did show up, a local resident launched a boat and the confusion was finally cleared up.  As Clinton lake kiter Hugh stated….when kiting it's best to stay near your launch…too many things could go wrong.

And that's the rest of the story.
