There is an avid windsurfing group in eastern KS that I didn't know
about, and they sail at Pomona Lake, which is an hour SW of Kansas
City. Saturday they had 30 windsurfers there!!!! THey have a
campground reserved and they all hang out, camp, and shread. See
below posts from their Yahoo group...sounds like WS nirvana from the
70's that we all long for. They have organized regular lessons in KC
at a small lake in Lenexa to get people into the sport, and free
loaner equipment that members can use for a month!
The kiters all go to Smithville. Everyone avoids Clinton in
Lawrence due to the boats, park fee, and rangers who have been
enforcing some idiotic Kansas board registration law, and giving
tickets--even to kiters!!!!

You have to join to review their posts at:

I can't believe all the new people who came to Wigger (Pomona
campsite) this weekend! It was like a windsurfing revival! What a
great religion!

It seemed like a pot luck weekend. So many windsurfers and campers
this weekend. How many windsurfers were there? Maybe 2 dozen? The
Wigger campground was packed, which was awesome! There was even maybe
half a dozen female windsurfers, although I was not keeping track very
well. I had a great day sailing today, even though I could not detach
from the lawn chair until 3 PM. I think I sailed from 3:30 to about 5
PM maybe? I think I sailed some of my personal best speeds today, and
the swell was awesome at times, more like Clinton when the swell gets
huge there, but NO BOATS! And no State Park Police running you down
to make sure your board is registered!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Pomona is plenty large and has a softer launch than Clinton.
Pomona also has lots of trees and shade, whereas Clinton only has a
parking lot.
I hear that Smithville is nice; it's the new kiteboarding hotspot.
Pomona is only about 10-15 minutes farther than Clinton. Pomona Lake
is farther for almost all of us, but we have a group camp reserved
there all season long, just for us windsurfers and friends.
You also can camp immediately adjacent to the water at Pomona with the
rest of the windsurfers. You can't do that at ClintonPomona Lake has
a lot less boat traffic than Smithville or Clinton Lakes.
The wind is typically better at Pomona and Clinton than Smithville.
Clinton is good for day sailing, when one has a tight schedule, and it
also can have nice rollers when the wind sets up from a certain
direction.
There is no place to hang out at Clinton except for in the boat
trailer parking lot.
Pomona Lake is where most of the windsurfers will be this weekend.

We should make a long weekend trip there sometime!  Looks like a good group.

Just got back from 10 days in Door Co. Wisconsin.  Got some nice sailing in (2 days of 15-20+, and several longboard days).  They have a 4th of July longboard race we should consider in the future (Check out the website www.mowind.org).  Also, anyone interested in racing longboards during this year's Whale of a Sail at Carlyle (Sept. 19-20)?  I'd like to get a good STL turnout for this.  A few years ago we had 9 people sailing.  Could make for a fun weekend/ campout.  I now have an extra lonboard I'll gladly loan to someone for that weekend.  Larry how about you?

Let me know,
Chris

PS  Had a GPS while sailing up north (Ralph, you'd be proud).  Hit 32 mph on an 8.0 on "Big Blue".  Might be a record for that size board & rig   :)

Chris,

When is the Whale of a sail this year?  I may be in town this time.  By the way if anybody emailed me in the past few weeks I wasn't receiving any emails.  The new virus protection I installed had almost all of my incoming emails blocked.  I didn't realize it until a friend phoned me this weekend.

Regards

Sorry to hear about your virus protection problem.  That's too bad because just last week I gave away $500 vouchers for the purchase of new windsurfing/kiting equipment to the first 10 people who responded to my post.  It's part of the President's Stimulus Plan to get the windsurfing/kiting community to buy new equipment.  And like the Cash for Clunkers program, the funds are now gone.

Whale of a Sail is Sept 19-20.

Hope you guys can make it,

Chris

Here's another group that looks to be well organized.  They had a windsurfing race this weekend which usually attracts 20-30 sailors.  They also do winter ice/snow kiting.  Plus winter kite lessons.  Check out some of the pics/videos.  Fond du Lac is an easy 6.hour drive from St. Louis.

On another note check out local kiter Matt McFarland's trip to Michigan in August.  He says this lake is 6-7 hours away as well.  He's currently at OBX, so I'm sure he'll post more photos of that trip soon.

Go to mstudiowest.com.  Click on client access, enter "SUP" and see some of his pics.
