“From the Rocks of Mars to the Slums of Cambodia: The Unexpected Evolution of Research”

Abstract:

Networking and communication research has tremendously evolved over the past few decades. This evolution has ranged from attempting to connect a handful of stationary machines to the current state-of-the-art research efforts that aim to reliably and robustly connect ultra small and mobile devices. In this talk I will give a very brief overview on this evolution, followed by a discussion of one of the hot areas in networking research nowadays, namely, Delay and Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs). DTNs attempts to provide networking connectivity in extreme conditions and environments where no path/route can be guaranteed. The goal of the talk is not only to provide insight into what DTNs are, but to shed some light on the unexpected ways in which research can create unplanned impact through telling the short story of DTNs.

Bio:

Dr. Khaled Harras is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the founder and director of the Networking Systems Lab (NSL) at the CMU-Qatar campus. His research interests spans different thrusts within computer networks including mobile ad-hoc, wireless, sensor, and vehicular networks. He is particularly interested in the design and analysis of architectures and protocols for different forms of challenged, delay and disruption tolerant networks (DTNs). His work has been published in world class journals and conferences, including with one of the earliest books in DTNs. Dr. Harras holds a bachelors degree in computer science with a double minor in electronics and business administration from the American University in Cairo. He was awarded the president’s cup and Ahmed. H. Zewail prize from AUC. He then received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB). He has served on the TPC of numerous conferences and is a professional member of the ACM and IEEE.
