"Make everything as simple as possible but not simpler", Albert Einstein,

Towards this goal, we present a new framework to describe the theory of wavelets and filter banks in a simple form that requires only a background in matrix theory. We present a parameterization of orthonormal filter banks and wavelets of compact support as a solution of a system of linear equations. This parameterization is used in many optimization problems to obtain well-known wavelets. We describe few applications for the design of matched wavelets for optimal signal representation. We also present a unified filter bank parameterization that encompasses all types of filter banks. This parameterization is employed to develop a novel design procedure that applies to all filter banks and avoids the difficulty of the polyphase representation in many design cases.

Mohamed F. Mansour, received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University in 1995 and 1998 respectively, received his M.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Texas at Dallas, and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 2003. Since then, he has been with the Systems and Applications R&D center at Texas Instruments Inc., Dallas, TX, where he has been involved in the design of of signal processing systems for multimedia, medical, and communications applications. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and he is the author/coauthor of around 50 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and around 15 issued and pending patents. His research interests are in the signal processing theory and optimization in signal processing.
